What This Arc Does
This blog began in March 2021 with a single premise: that institutional analysis — the examination of how organisations, rules, and governance structures shape human outcomes — is the most underutilised framework available for understanding why the world works as it does and what changes it. Four years and seven hundred articles later, the premise is not abandoned but refined. The world is not only institutions. But institutions are a larger part of why the world is as it is, and a more changeable part than most analyses acknowledge.
The closing arc that begins here is not a summary of what came before. It is an argument about what the accumulated analysis adds up to — twelve pieces that synthesise the framework, name the structural laws that the analysis has identified, and position them in relation to the questions they are meant to answer. Not what has been covered but what has been argued. Not the inventory of institutional analysis but its claim.
The Argument's Stakes
The stakes of the argument are not academic. The institutions that govern healthcare, education, housing, criminal justice, immigration, labour markets, information, and democratic participation are not background conditions of human life — they are its primary determinants for the people who have the least capacity to opt out of them. The quality of those institutions determines whether people live or die from preventable conditions, whether they have access to the education and economic opportunity that allow them to build the lives they want, and whether the political system is responsive to their interests or to the interests of the powerful who have the resources to shape it. Institutional analysis is urgent because institutions determine outcomes, and the outcomes they determine are the ones that matter most.
The closing arc is the argument's culmination — not a conclusion but a structural statement. Four years of analysis have produced a framework. The framework has produced a claim. The claim is: institutions are the mechanism through which the social contract is honoured or broken, and the governance of institutions is the governance of what we owe each other.
