The Next Generation's Institutional Inheritance

The institutional choices being made now are the inheritance that the next generation will receive. What we are building for them — and what we are failing to build — is visible in the current institutional landscape.

The Inheritance

Every institutional arrangement currently in place — the social insurance systems, the climate governance frameworks, the democratic institutions, the financial architecture, the healthcare systems, and the digital governance frameworks — will be the inheritance that the people who are children today will receive when they assume governance responsibility in the 2040s and 2050s. The quality of that inheritance is being determined now, by the governance choices being made by the current generation of institutional designers, politicians, and citizens. The pension systems that are underfunded, the climate governance that is insufficient, the democratic institutions that are eroding, and the digital governance frameworks that are being built without adequate accountability — each is a specific bequest to the next generation that the current generation is making through the governance choices it is and is not making.

The specific institutional inheritances that are most consequential for the next generation are the ones where the compounding of current governance choices most directly determines future options. The climate governance failure that is compounding now will be the climate emergency that the next generation manages — not the current generation. The pension system underfunding that is accumulating now will be the fiscal crisis that the next generation addresses — not the current generation. The democratic institution erosion that is progressing now will be the democratic institution repair project that the next generation faces — not the current generation. The current generation's governance failures are the next generation's governance inheritance, with interest.

The institutional inheritance we are building for the next generation is visible in the current institutional landscape. The institutions we are building well are the institutions the next generation will be able to depend on. The institutions we are building badly — or not building at all — are the crises the next generation will spend their governance energy managing. The choices are ours to make. The consequences are theirs to live.
