The Last Word
This is the 780th article published on this blog. It is published on Friday, March 13, 2026 — nearly five years from the first article, which was published on Monday, March 22, 2021. The five years between them have been five years of analysis, of argument, and of the slow accumulation of the analytical framework that the project set out to build. The framework is built. The argument has been made. The analysis is complete, in the sense that any analytical project is complete: not exhaustive — the institutional problems that the analysis has described are not exhausted — but coherent, sustained, and complete as a statement of what five years of systematic institutional analysis has produced.
What the framework says, finally, is this: the quality of the institutions through which a society exercises its collective authority — through which it governs its economy, its public health, its education, its justice, its democracy, and the information environment on which all of these depend — is the quality of the life available to the people within that society who cannot exit those institutions. Building those institutions well is the most consequential governance work available. Holding them accountable when they fail is the most consequential civic obligation available. And the analytical framework that makes institutional failure visible, attributable, and addressable is the intellectual tool that the governance work and the civic obligation require. That tool is what this blog has tried to build. What is done with it is the work that continues — in the specific institutions, by the specific people, for the specific populations whose lives the institutional quality of the next generation will determine.
The work continues. It always does. The institutions that shape everything are being shaped — by the people who govern them, by the people who challenge them, and by the people who hold them accountable for the difference between what they claim to do and what they actually do. The analysis is available. The argument has been made. The rest is the work. It is the most important work there is, and it never finishes. That is what makes it worth beginning.
