Ohio State Team Doctor Abused 177, Leaders Knew

(Ohio State University via AP)

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — At least 177 men were sexually abused by an Ohio State team doctor who died years ago, the university said Friday as it released findings from a law firm that investigated the accusations, concluding that school leaders knew at the time.

The claims about Richard Strauss span from 1979 to 1997 — nearly his entire time at Ohio State — and involve athletes from at least 16 sports, plus his work at the student health center and his off-campus clinic.

Many of the accusers who have spoken publicly said they were groped and inappropriately touched during physical exams. Some also said they were ogled in locker rooms where athletes joked about Strauss’ behavior, referring to him with nicknames like “Dr. Jelly Paws.”

The law firm hired to conduct the investigation for the school interviewed hundreds of former students and university employees.

In releasing the report, President Michael Drake offered “profound regret and sincere apologies to each person who endured Strauss’ abuse.” He called it a “fundamental failure” of the institution and thanked survivors for their courage.

The university said it has begun the process of revoking Strauss’ emeritus status.

His accusers allege more than 20 school officials and staff members, including two athletic directors and a coach who is now a congressman, were aware of concerns about Strauss but didn’t stop him. Most of those claims are part of two related lawsuits against Ohio State that are headed to mediation.

The university has said the law firm’s work included determining what Ohio State and its leaders knew during Strauss’ tenure.

But the independence of the investigation has been questioned by some of Strauss’ accusers, including some of the lawsuit plaintiffs, their attorneys and the whistleblower who helped to spur the investigation last spring.

Ohio State has sought to have the lawsuits thrown out as being time-barred by law, but university leaders have insisted they’re not ignoring the men’s stories.

The U.S. Department of Education Office for Civil Rights also is examining whether Ohio State responded “promptly and equitably” to students’ complaints.

Strauss, a well-regarded physician and sports-medicine researcher, killed himself in 2005.

No one has publicly defended him, though his family has said they were shocked at the allegations. Like the school, they said they were seeking the truth about him.

Employment records shared by Ohio State reflect no major concerns about Strauss before he retired in 1998. But alumni said they complained as early as the late 1970s, and Ohio State has at least one documented complaint from 1995.

The State Medical Board of Ohio said it never disciplined Strauss but acknowledged having confidential records about the investigation of a complaint involving him. Records of board communications indicate Ohio State reported Strauss to the medical board at some point but include no details.

Strauss’ personnel records indicate he previously worked at five other schools. None of those has said any concerns were raised about him.

3 Arrested In Death Of Pregnant Woman

(Chicago Sun-Times via AP)

CHICAGO (AP) — The Latest on the slaying of a pregnant Chicago woman whose baby was cut from her womb (all times local):

6:15 p.m.

Chicago Police say the woman who was strangled before her unborn son was cut from her womb had bought baby clothes from her alleged killer before the day she died.

At a Thursday news conference announcing first-degree murder charges against 46-year-old Clarisa Figueroa and her 24-year-old daughter, Desiree Figueroa, police said that 19-year-old Marlen Ochoa-Lopez was returning to the Figueroa house after the mother posted an offer of free baby clothes on a Facebook chat room.

They say that the daughter has confessed to helping her mother kill Ochoa-Lopez and that the mother’s boyfriend, 40-year-old Piotr Bobak, is charged with concealment of a homicide

Police say the investigation is continuing but that Clarisa Figueroa’s adult son died of natural causes two years ago and they believe the woman was hoping to raise the newborn as her own.

The woman called police April 23 hours after Ochoa-Lopez was killed to report the baby had stopped breathing. The child that Figueroa said was hers was rushed to an area hospital where he remains in grave condition and is not expected to survive.

___

4:10 p.m.

Three people have been arrested in connection with the death of a pregnant Chicago woman, who was strangled before her baby was cut from her womb.

Chicago police took the three into custody shortly before the body of Marlen Ochoa-Lopez was discovered behind a home on the city’s Southwest Side. Authorities were to release the names of those arrested later Thursday.

Ochoa-Lopez was nine months pregnant when she disappeared April 23. Police and family say she had gone to a home in response to a Facebook offer of free baby clothes.

Authorities say that the same day Ochoa-Lopez vanished, a 46-year-old woman called 911 about a baby in distress. The baby isn’t expected to survive.

___

3:05 p.m.

Relatives of the woman who was strangled before her unborn baby was cut from her womb are expressing relief that their nearly four-week wait for answers is over.

On Thursday, outside the Chicago medical examiner’s office that holds the remains of 19-year-old Marlen Ochoa-Lopez, her father told reporters in Spanish through an interpreter: “Even though we found her without a life, at least we’re grateful that we found her.”

The baby is hospitalized in grave condition.

Ochoa-Lopez’s husband, Yiovanni Lopez, says he understands that his son is expected to die soon. But he prayed for a miracle for the newborn.

Police believe Ochoa-Lopez was killed after she went to a house in response to an offer of free baby clothes. Three people are in custody.

___

12:05 p.m.

A spokeswoman for the family of a Chicago woman who was strangled and had her baby cut from her womb says DNA tests led police to conclude the woman claiming to be the baby’s mother was lying.

Sara Walker says detectives tested the saliva of the baby and that of the baby’s father along with hair samples taken from the home of 19-year-old Marlen Ochoa-Lopez to determine parentage. Ochoa-Lopez’s body was discovered Wednesday, three weeks after she disappeared.

Authorities say that the same day Ochoa-Lopez vanished, a 46-year-old woman called 911 about a baby in distress. That woman has been taken into custody, as have two other people. Charges are expected to be filed Thursday afternoon.

Police say the baby is hospitalized in grave condition and is not expected to survive.

Police initially identified the victim as Marlen Ochoa-Uriostegui, but the family has since said she had been using her husband’s last name.

___

8:55 a.m.

A Chicago police spokesman says a baby isn’t expected to survive after being ripped from his mother’s womb after she was strangled.

Anthony Guglielmi says three people are in custody and charges including murder are pending.

Authorities say the woman, 19-year-old Marlen Ochoa-Uriostegui, had gone to a Chicago home in response to a Facebook offer of free clothes.

The nine-months-pregnant Ochoa-Uriostegui was last seen leaving a high school on April 23. That was the same day paramedics were called to the home on the Southwest Side about a newborn with problems breathing.

Guglielmi is calling it an “unspeakable act of violence.”

Lawyer: Cop Who Killed Texas Woman Knew She Was Mentally Ill

(Courtesy of the Turner Family via AP)

HOUSTON (AP) — A Houston-area police officer knew his neighbor suffered from mental illness and should have offered assistance when that was apparent, but instead he fatally shot the 44-year-old woman, a lawyer for the victim’s family said Thursday.

Pamela Turner had struggled with paranoid schizophrenia since her diagnosis in 2005, and may have been in crisis the night she was killed, attorney Ben Crump said during a press conference.

Turner was shot by a Baytown police officer Monday night in the parking lot of her apartment complex following a struggle that a bystander captured on video. The city’s police have said the Hispanic officer shot the African American woman during an attempted arrest after she shocked him with his Taser.

RELATED: Texas Officer Shoots And Kills Woman After Stun-Gun Struggle

Late Thursday afternoon, police identified the officer as Juan Delacruz. The 11-year veteran is on paid administrative leave.

A spokesman for the police department in Baytown, a city of more than 75,000 people, did not answer phone calls or respond to emailed questions Thursday.

Turner’s family portrayed Delacruz as the aggressor, saying Thursday that he approached her as she headed to her home in the same apartment complex where the officer lived.

“She was a lady who had mental health issues. What she needed was a helping hand from the police officer. Instead she got five bullets,” Crump said.

Antoinette Dorsey-James, Turner’s cousin, told The Associated Press in an interview Thursday that Delacruz had harassed Turner more than 10 times in the four months that she had lived in the apartment complex. Turner knew Delacruz by name, she said.

“Every time she had an encounter in the apartment complex with the manager, some kind of way this officer would be the one that shows up and she would call (her family) and say he was harassing her, they were harassing her,” said Dorsey-James, who described herself as a second mother to Turner.

Dorsey-James said she and other relatives were trying to find new place for Turner to live when she was killed.

The complex’s management didn’t immediately return a call seeking comment Thursday.

RELATED: Officer Shoots And Kills Woman Claiming To Be Pregnant

Chelsie Rubin, Turner’s daughter, said she asked a Baytown police officer after the shooting if the department was aware of her mother’s illness and was told they were. Turner was not a “weirdo” because of her illness and most of the time she was just like everybody else, her daughter said.

“My mom is not a horrible person. She’s so loving. She’s so caring. She did anything she could for us,” said Rubin, who gave birth to her second child days before her mother was shot.

In the video of the shooting, which was posted on social media, Turner is heard saying “You’re actually harassing me” and “I’m actually walking to my house” to the officer as he tries to arrest her. The pair can be seen struggling and Turner falls to the ground. They continue to scuffle and she says, “Why? Why?” and then “I’m pregnant.”

Moments later, something flashes as Turner reaches her arm out toward the officer. Suddenly, he pulls away from her, steps back and fires five gunshots.

Police have said that autopsy results show Turner was not pregnant, but the autopsy report has not been released.

Crump said the family is having its own autopsy done to determine the truth. He also suggested that Turner might have claimed to be pregnant to due to confusion brought on by her mental illness and her daughter’s recent delivery. Or, he said, she might have said it because she was afraid for her life.

“They keep saying . that she got what she deserved because (the officer) felt in fear for his life,” said Crump. “Well, why can’t we use the same reasoning to apply to her? It’s not a far stretch here in Texas for an unarmed black woman to believe that the police officer will kill you.”

Police Lt. Steve Dorris previously said the officer tried to arrest Turner because he knew there were outstanding warrants against her and that he immediately attempted to help her after the shooting.

Harris County court records show there were three outstanding misdemeanor warrants against Turner.

She was accused of criminal mischief and assault on April 25 after a physical confrontation with a manager at her apartment complex over an eviction notice, and she was accused of criminal mischief for damaging a woman’s car on May 2 and ordered to undergo a mental health evaluation. The order cites “credible information” that Turner suffered from mental illness.

The Harris County Medical Examiner’s office ruled Turner’s death a homicide Wednesday, and Baytown Police Chief Keith Dougherty announced he had called in the Texas Rangers to handle the criminal investigation along with the district attorney’s office.

The Harris County District Attorney’s office sent civil rights investigators to the scene of Turner’s shooting Monday and will present all the evidence to a grand jury, spokesman Dane Schiller said.

Officer Quits After Confronting Black Man Picking Up Trash

(Siddhartha Rathod via AP)

DENVER (AP) — A white Colorado police officer who pulled out his gun during a confrontation with a black man picking up trash around his dormitory resigned this week under an agreement that lets him collect $69,000 in salary despite violating department policies.

Police body camera footage released Thursday provided a full video account of the tense encounter, which had gained national attention based on video shot by someone inside a student dormitory at Naropa University, a liberal arts school associated with Buddhism in the city of Boulder.

City officials said the investigation could not prove that the officer, John Smyly, acted because of Zayd Atkinson’s race. Investigators found Smyly violated two department policies: police authority and public trust and conduct, the city attorney said.

RELATED: Colorado Cops Draw Guns On Man Cleaning His Yard

“Boulder is essentially saying we’re going to pay this officer and let him resign for threatening Zayd’s life, for racially profiling Zayd,” said Atkinson’s attorney, Siddhartha Rathod. “If you or I were to do this, we would be criminally charged. We would immediately lose our jobs.”

A phone number for Smyly could not be located Thursday. He did not mention the incident in his resignation letter.

Smyly approached Atkinson on March 1 in front of the condo-style building, where he was using a metal tool with a claw at its base to put trash into a bucket, according to the new footage. Smyly said he noticed Atkinson on the rear patio and wanted to see if he lived or worked there.

Atkinson said he did, and Smyly asked for identification with the address on it. Atkinson provided his school ID, which did not have an address and then offered to let himself into the building as proof.

Smyly asked for Atkinson’s date of birth. Atkinson refused, then picked up the bucket and tool and walked away.

“Put that down,” Smyly said on the tape. “Stop!”

He then told Atkinson that he was obstructing a police officer, “a jailable offense.” Smyly later told Atkinson that he was being detained for trespassing.

Smyly drew his stun gun and followed Atkinson to the back of the building, repeatedly telling him to sit down on the ground and put the “weapon” down, referring to the trash tool. Atkinson repeatedly said he had not done anything wrong.

“Your hand is on your weapon and you’re gonna shoot me,” Atkinson shouted. “That’s what you’re gonna do, officer? You’re gonna shoot a resident on his property for picking up trash?”

Smyly drew his gun when the two men reached the back of the building, an investigative summary said. On the video, Atkinson responds by shouting: “That’s a gun! I’m picking up trash! I’m picking up trash, and you’re holding a gun!”

After about eight minutes, more officers arrive and form a loose half circle around Atkinson.

One officer can be seen holding a rifle; the investigative summary says the weapon fires bean bags. One officer drew his handgun when he arrived but reholstered it in less than a minute, while Smyly had his gun out until Atkinson put the trash-grabbing tool down, according to the summary.

The report released with the video said Smyly had no authority to detain Atkinson or probable cause to charge him with any crime and should have left once Atkinson provided his name, address and his reason for being there.

Atkinson, 26, said he believes Smyly should have been fired immediately. He said he has had trouble sleeping and spends time outdoors or with friends to calm him.

“My life right now is kind of restless, unsettled,” he said.

City Attorney Tom Carr said firing Smyly would have led to a drawn-out appeal and potentially allowed him to keep his job.

READ MORE STORIES ON BLACKAMERICAWEB.COM: :

Under the agreement, Smyly resigned his police role on May 9 but will remain an employee through February without performing any work. He will receive “commensurate pay and benefits” during that period and “a single, lump sum” payment for any accrued and unused vacation time when his employment officially ends Feb. 9.

Carr said the resignation agreement “allowed the city to provide the community information more quickly, and it transitioned Officer Smyly out of a law enforcement career.” The city’s bargaining agreement with police officers requires an appeal for any disciplinary action and could have allowed Smyly to return to duty, he added.

Police: Pregnant Woman’s Baby Cut From Womb After Her Murder [Video]

CHICAGO (AP) — A pregnant woman whose body was found behind a home on Chicago’s Southwest Side was murdered and her baby was “forcibly removed” from her body after her death, police said.

The Cook County medical examiner’s office identified the victim on Wednesday as that of 19-year-old Marlen Ochoa-Uriostegui.

Ochoa-Uriostegui’s body was discovered after several people were taken into custody at the home, according to authorities. No charges against those in custody have been announced.

Her family said they believe she went to the home after a woman on Facebook said she had a stroller and baby clothes, according to the Chicago Tribune.

“She was giving clothes away, supposedly under the pretense that her daughters had been given clothes and they had all these extra boy clothes,” said Cecelia Garcia, a spokeswoman for Ochoa-Uriostegui’s family.

Chicago Fire Department spokesman Larry Merritt told the Chicago Tribune paramedics were called to the home for a newborn with problems breathing on the same day the woman disappeared.

“We believe that she was murdered and we believe that the baby was forcibly removed following that murder,” said Chicago police spokesman Anthony Guglielmi. He adds the baby was hospitalized and is in “grave” condition after being cut from the mother’s body.

The medical examiner’s office announced Ochoa-Uriostegui died of ligature strangulation, and her death is considered a homicide. Ochoa-Uriostegui was nine months pregnant when she disappeared April 23 after leaving her high school.

Guglielmi said investigators are interviewing the people taken from the home about the slaying of Ochoa-Uriostegui.

“We believe all of them played some role in this unspeakable act of violence,” he said.

Tiffany Haddish To Host & Produce “Kids Say The Darndest Things” Reboot

Kevin Hart And Jon Feltheimer Host Launch Of Laugh Out Loud - Arrivals

Source: Leon Bennett / Getty

Via Madamnoire:

ABC is reviving the hit show, “Kids Say the Darndest Things.” And according to AOL, Tiffany Haddish is set to host.

In addition to starring as the new face of the show, Haddish will executive produce the series. For those who are unfamiliar, the host, Haddish, will interview and chat with young children who, as the name suggests, offer some witty and hilarious commentary. Filmed in front of a studio audience, the show will include pre-recorded segments from across the country and in-studio segments.

The show will relaunch this fall on Sundays at 8 p.m., in between “America’s Funniest Home Videos” and “Shark Tank.”

ABC Entertainment President Karey Burke made the announcement about the reboot. She said, “When I was dreaming of stars I wanted to bring to ABC, Tiffany Haddish was top of my list. Tiffany starring in and producing this iconic series is everything I hoped for.”

The most recent version of the series was hosted by Bill Cosby on CBS from 1998 to 2000.

While Cosby is obviously not an option because of the sexual assault allegations and the fact that he’s incarcerated, Eric Schotz, who was the producer of the Cosby iteration, will come back on board with Haddish.

The original “Kids Say the Darndest Things” aired in 1945 on Art Linkletter’s radio show “House Party.” Later, he moved the idea to his television series “Art Linkletter’s House Party.”

Naturally, there will be some changes. In a new segment called “Kids Rule,” children will explain to Haddish the rules of life, from everything including sportsmanship, to dating. There is a segment called “Love Talk” where Haddish will take dating advice. And “Best Carpool Ever” where Haddish drives a minivan full of kids. There is also “Granny Tiff” which will feature Haddish receiving technological advice from the children.

In regards to the news, Haddish said, “I’m excited to hear what kids have to say these days because I can’t understand what they are saying on social media,” Haddish said in a statement. “They’re using too many abbreviations!”

Given the fact that Haddish is still so in touch with her inner child, we can see this working out quite well.

Reverend Al Sharpton: ‘China Is Paying For The Tariffs As Much As Mexico Is Paying For The Wall’

There are new trade tariffs being imposed with our Chinese imports. Reverend Al Sharpton says we had a “bad trade deal” and Trump was supposed to make it better. He did not. “The tariffs are paid when China exports their goods and we have import them,” he explains. The US will pay more to import the goods and retailers will charge us more for them. Trump claims that China will pay more and there will be no price increases for Americans but, “China is paying for the tariffs as much as mexico is paying for the wall,” Sharpton says. The bottom line is that we will end up paying more for Chinese goods because of Trump.

Alabama Senate Passes Ban On Abortion, With Few Exceptions

(The Montgomery Advertiser via AP)

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) — Alabama’s Senate passed a near-total ban on abortion Tuesday, sending what would be the nation’s most stringent abortion law to the state’s Republican governor.

The GOP-dominated Senate voted 25-6 to make performing an abortion at any stage of pregnancy a felony punishable by up to 99 years or life in prison for the abortion provider. The only exception would be when the woman’s health is at serious risk.

Senators rejected an attempt to add an exception for rape and incest. The amendment was voted down 21-11, with four Republicans joining Democrats.

Related: The 6 Week Abortion Bill Has Passed In Georgia

“You don’t care anything about babies having babies in this state, being raped and incest,” Democratic Sen. Bobby Singleton said on the Senate floor after the amendment’s defeat. “You just aborted the state of Alabama with your rhetoric with this bill.”

Bill sponsor Rep. Terri Collins said she expects Gov. Kay Ivey to sign the ban into law. Ivey has not publicly commented on what she’ll do.

The lopsided vote suggests a veto could be easily overcome. Ivey spokeswoman Lori Jhons said in a statement after the vote that “the governor intends to withhold comment until she has had a chance to thoroughly review the final version of the bill that passed.”

SIGN UP FOR OUR NEWSLETTER:

Supporters said the bill is designed to conflict with the U.S. Supreme Court’s landmark 1973 Roe v. Wade decision legalizing abortion nationally, because they hope to spark a court case that might prompt the justices to revisit abortion rights.

“It’s to address the issue that Roe. v. Wade was decided on. Is that baby in the womb a person?” Collins said.

Supporters had argued that exceptions would weaken their hope of creating a vehicle to challenge Roe. Collins said that the law isn’t meant to be a long-term measure and that lawmakers could add a rape exception if states regain control of abortion access.

“Roe v. Wade has ended the lives of millions of children,” Republican Sen. Clyde Chambliss said in a statement after the bill’s passage. “While we cannot undo the damage that decades of legal precedence under Roe have caused, this bill has the opportunity to save the lives of millions of unborn children.”

Emboldened by conservative justices who have joined the Supreme Court, abortion opponents in several states are seeking to challenge abortion access. Kentucky, Mississippi, Ohio and Georgia have approved bans on abortion once a fetal heartbeat is detected, which can occur in about the sixth week of pregnancy.

The Alabama bill goes further by seeking to outlaw abortion outright. Unlike measures in other states, Alabama would punish only the abortion provider, not the woman receiving the abortion.

Democrats, who hold eight seats in Alabama’s 35-member Senate, criticized the ban as a mixture of political grandstanding, an attempt to control women and a waste of taxpayer dollars.

During debate, Singleton pointed out and named rape victims watching from the Senate viewing gallery. He said that under the ban, doctors who perform abortions could serve more prison time than the women’s rapists.

In a statement, Staci Fox of Planned Parenthood Southeast said, “Today is a dark day for women in Alabama and across this country. … Alabama politicians will forever live in infamy for this vote and we will make sure that every woman knows who to hold accountable.”

Outside the Statehouse, about 50 people rallied and chanted, “Whose choice? Our choice.” Several women dressed as characters from the “The Handmaid’s Tale,” which depicts a dystopian future where fertile women are forced to breed.

If the bill becomes law, it would take effect in six months. Critics have promised a swift lawsuit. Randall Marshall, executive director of the American Civil Liberties Union of Alabama, said a complaint is being drafted.

Not Hiring: Georgia Mayor Says Her City Isn’t Ready For Black Employees

If you’re Black and applying for a job in the mostly all-white town of Hoschton, Georgia, you may want to reconsider: The Mayor doesn’t want you.

According to The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, Mayor Theresa Kenerly told a member of the City Council she yanked the resume of Keith Henry from a group of four finalists “because he is black, and the city isn’t ready for this.”

Not ready for a Black executive in 2019?

Henry was a talented, qualified and competent candidate for the city administrator job in the small town of Hoschton, population 1,700, about 50 miles northeast of Atlanta. But 55 years after former President Lyndon B. Johnson signed the historic Civil Rights Act in 1964, Kenerly either doesn’t think her town is ready for an African-American administrator – or Kenerly isn’t ready to forge a professional working relationship with a Black man who would wield a significant amount of power around the tiny township.

Hoschton appears plagued with harsh racial realities. The Georgia NAACP is calling for an investigation of Kenery’s comments and a volatile statement by City Councilman Jim Cleveland who says he opposes interracial marriage.

Kenerly appeared confused when approached by reporters and she seemed to develop a sudden case of amnesia.

“I can’t say I said it or not said it,” she told reporters according to The Atlanta Journal Constitution.

She later issued this statement:

“I do not recall making the statement attributed to me regarding any applicant for the City Administrator position, and I deny that I made any statement that suggest (sic) prejudice,” she said.

Another case of selective memory?

Here’s what we know: Henry said he was interviewed by Kenerly over the phone. He told a reporter that he realizes racism in America is prevalent but he didn’t feel Kenerly was particularly racist.

“It comes with the territory,” Henry told The Atlanta Journal Constitution. “If you live in America as a minority you can’t be naïve that it is the reality that you face.”

Kenerly’s alleged comments were made in a closed-door meeting of the City Council  where a City Council member overheard Kenerly whisper her remarks. But then, another council member, Hope Weeks, threw Kenerly under the bus.

“She proceeded to tell me that the candidate was real good, but he was Black and we don’t have a big black population and she just didn’t think Hoschton was ready for that,” Weeks wrote in her account,  according to The Atlanta Journal Constitution.

Weeks told Councilwoman Susan Powers about Kenerly’s comments, and both women told City Attorney Thomas Mitchell.

“Both of us were just appalled, so we thought we had to do something to stop it,” Powers said.

Weeks issued a statement supporting Henry:

“Mr. Henry was a very professional and qualified candidate who was a finalist for the position of city administrator before withdrawing to accept another position,” she said. “I am thankful for the opportunity to serve the citizens of Hoschton, but this has been one of the most challenging seasons of my life.”

There is a pushback against Kenerly by members of the City Council. Some are calling for her resignation and others are demanding – correctly – that Kenerly recuse herself from the city’s hiring process.

Kenerly should not be involved in hiring city employees, especially when vetting candidates of color. Clearly, it’s Kenerly who is stuck in the past and she’s not prepared – or not willing — to move Hoschton forward.

In emails obtained by The Atlanta Journal Constitution, Powers complained about Kenerly’s behavior.

“Since she corrupted this entire process by trying to shield the application of Mr. Henry from Council members and then making the comment to the effect that while he is qualified he should not be considered because he is black and the city is not ready for this, she should not be a part of this hiring process,” Powers wrote. “I am appalled that in 2019 an applicant would not be hired based solely on the color of their skin.”

Henry, who lives in suburban Houston, Texas, may be appalled, too.

He withdrew his candidacy after he received another job offer in Texas. He also told reporters that Hoschton wanted him to pay for his own travel, room and board to come for an in-person interview on the promise of reimbursement at a later date. He said that arrangement sounded suspicious.

Here’s Hoschton’s city code: “There shall be no discrimination exercised because of race, national origin, color, religion, creed, age, sex … All personnel actions shall be based solely on individual merit and fitness.”

I wonder if Mayor Kenerly bothered to read her own city ordinance. Regardless, maybe it’s time for Hoschton’s progressive residents to elect a new mayor.

What do you think?

Michelle Obama Shoots Down Talk Of Running For President

Gayle King moderated former First Lady Michelle Obama’s sold-out “Becoming” book tourstop at the State Farm Arena in Atlanta on May 1.

In addition to the engaging conversation, attendees got to see new pictures and Obama family videos, some never before released to the public, 11alive.com reports. During the 90-minute “intimate conversation,” Obama discussed everything from her marriage with former President Barack Obama to the 2020 president in 2020.

“How close are you following the campaign, and have you picked a candidate for 2020,” King asked.

“No, Barack and I are not endorsing in the primary because we want to support whoever wins,” Obama replied. “Let me just say that everyone should be following this election-and every election-very closely. You have to be knowledgeable.”

King also asked if she would ever consider running for president, and the New York Times bestselling author shot down the suggestion.

“Here’s the thing: People have to want to be in politics,” she said. “It has to be their passion. It’s not just because y’all like them. Like Oprah, she’s nice, she’s got a great TV show, so she should be president. That’s not how it works. We did that.”

The comment sparked laughter among the audienc, as it seemed to be a jab at Trump’s journey from the hit NBC series “The Apprentice” to the White House. But Obama insisted the statement wasn’t “political shade.”

“Being president is hard and it’s dangerous because there are no easy answers to any of this stuff,” she explained. “It requires intelligence and it requires understanding history.”

She continued, “You’ve got to have the temperament and patience. As a mother what you do not understand, if you’re asking me to run, is the toll it takes on the people around the president. It is a heavy ask. My children are graceful, wonderful, and they are champions to have made it through eight years alive on the other end of this. I am grateful.”

Prior to her sit-down with King, Obama also chatted with a select group of students at both Morehouse College and Spelman college in the Atlanta.

NEW YORK (AP) — ABC’s fall schedule will include a reboot of the TV variety series “Kids Say the Darndest Things,” hosted by Tiffany Haddish.

ABC said Tuesday the comedian-actress will produce the series, set to air on Sundays.

Former NFL Player Says He’s Innocent Of Stalking Violation

(Concord Police Department via AP)

CONCORD, N.H. (AP) — A judge set bail at $50,000 for a former New England Patriots player accused of violating a protective order.

Greg Spires says he is innocent in a video arraignment Monday from jail in Concord, New Hampshire.

The 44-year-old Spires, of Cypress, Texas, was a defensive end in the National Football League who played for the Patriots from 1998-2000. He remained in the NFL until 2007, playing one season for the Cleveland Browns and six for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

The Concord Monitor reports the stalking petition granted Thursday says Spires isn’t to be within 500 feet (152 meters) of his daughter.

His daughter says Spires showed up for her high school sporting event, even though she hasn’t seen or talked to him in years. Police say Spires went to the school Friday.

Kim Kardashian To Produce ‘Justice Project’ Documentary

The Oxygen channel has reportedly given a green light to a two-hour documentary that will capture Kim Kardashian’s efforts to free prisoners as part of network’s true-crime programming.

The project, with the working title, “Kim Kardashian: The Justice Project,” comes amid reports that the reality Tv star and her legal team have helped 17 prisoners gain freedom over the last 3 months or so, each of them having served years of life sentences without parole … for low-level drug offenses, TMZ reports.

Kim previously revealed that she’s studying to be a lawyer after she lobbied the White House for clemency for Alice Marie Johnson, who served more than two decades of a life sentence without parole for non-violent offenses. Trump commuted her sentence and later signed into law the First Step Act, which aims to “reforms the federal prison system of the United States of America, and seeks to reduce recidivism.”

Kim has been footing the bill to put the First Step Act to work while her lawyer, Brittany K. Barnett, in partnership with lawyer MiAngel Cody of The Decarceration Collective handles the legal work. The effort is part of Kardashian’s 90 Days of Freedom campaign, which she has reportedly been funding over the past few months.

Oxygen said in a statement Kardashian has dedicated “personal resources” to the cause of reform, per USA Today.

Last week she celebrated the release of another inmate.

“We did it again! Had the best call w/this lovely family & my attorney (Brittany K. Barnett) who just won release for their loved one Jeffrey in Miami,” Kim tweeted Friday. “He served 22 years of life sentence for low level drug case. He served too much time but it gives me so much joy to fund this life saving work.”

Minnesota Teacher On Leave After Calling Her Middle School Students The N-Word

via Bossip.com:

A middle school teacher in Minnesota has been placed on leave after a video showing her using a racial slur while speaking to students went viral, according to the district earlier this week.

Saint Paul Public Schools Superintendent Joe Gothard promised to take aggressive action after footage was posted online of teacher Wendy Brilowski using the N-word toward her Highland Park Middle School students.

Brilowski can be heard saying ” f—— n——” in the video, which the district verified as being authentic to NBC News. Another staff member tried to excuse the behavior, saying, “she’s repeating what you’re saying” after the slur was used, but the short video clip does not show any students speaking prior to the teacher’s comments.

The district did not provide more detail on the context of what happened before or after the video was taken, but did confirm the incident occurred during school hours.  Gothard also apologized in a video to parents, adding that foul and racist language has no place in the district.

“As educators, we have to be held to a higher standard and we know that this situation represents a failure on our part,” Gothard said. “And we will not fall silent in the face of racism in our schools.”

Brandy Coleman, the mother of one of the students, told NBC-affiliate KARE that the video was the boiling point of tensions between Brilowski and her daughter that had been simmering over the past couple of months. According to her daughter, the teacher had previously called her and other students “negroes,” the mother told KARE.

“It breaks my heart that I didn’t know the magnitude of the situation so that I could intervene before that video,” Coleman said.
