Man Pleads Guilty In Mall Attack Against Boy, Faces 19 Years

(Bloomington Police Department via AP)

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — A man who reportedly told investigators that he went to the Mall of America “looking for someone to kill” pleaded guilty Tuesday to throwing a 5-year-old boy from a third-floor balcony and faces 19 years in prison.

Emmanuel Aranda, of Minneapolis, pleaded guilty to attempted premeditated first-degree murder in the April 12 attack. The child suffered head trauma and multiple broken bones but survived.

Aranda, 24, will be sentenced June 3. His plea deal calls for prosecutors to drop an aggravated-circumstances component to the charge that could have meant an additional year in prison. Prosecutor Cheri Ann Townsend said the boy’s family supports the plea deal.

Police arrested Aranda moments after the attack as he waited to board a light-rail train at the mall, and said he had quickly admitted to the attack.

A criminal complaint filed soon after the attack said Aranda told police he was angry at being rejected by women at the mall and was “looking for someone to kill” when he went there.

He had two past convictions for assaults at the mall, both in 2015, and had been banned from the property at one point. Court records showed that Aranda had been ordered to undergo psychological evaluation or treatment after those assaults, and his attorney Paul Sellers said Aranda had been in mental health court.

Aranda, wearing an orange jail jumpsuit, spoke quietly during Tuesday’s hearing while giving yes-or-no answers to questions aimed at making sure he understood what he was admitting.

The child plunged almost 40 feet and suffered head trauma and multiple broken bones. His family released a statement in late April saying he was alert and no longer in critical condition. On Monday, the family said he continues to heal.

Michelle Obama Shoots Down Talk Of Running For President

Gayle King moderated former First Lady Michelle Obama’s sold-out “Becoming” book tourstop at the State Farm Arena in Atlanta on May 1.

In addition to the engaging conversation, attendees got to see new pictures and Obama family videos, some never before released to the public, 11alive.com reports. During the 90-minute “intimate conversation,” Obama discussed everything from her marriage with former President Barack Obama to the 2020 president in 2020.

“How close are you following the campaign, and have you picked a candidate for 2020,” King asked.

“No, Barack and I are not endorsing in the primary because we want to support whoever wins,” Obama replied. “Let me just say that everyone should be following this election-and every election-very closely. You have to be knowledgeable.”

King also asked if she would ever consider running for president, and the New York Times bestselling author shot down the suggestion.

“Here’s the thing: People have to want to be in politics,” she said. “It has to be their passion. It’s not just because y’all like them. Like Oprah, she’s nice, she’s got a great TV show, so she should be president. That’s not how it works. We did that.”

The comment sparked laughter among the audienc, as it seemed to be a jab at Trump’s journey from the hit NBC series “The Apprentice” to the White House. But Obama insisted the statement wasn’t “political shade.”

“Being president is hard and it’s dangerous because there are no easy answers to any of this stuff,” she explained. “It requires intelligence and it requires understanding history.”

She continued, “You’ve got to have the temperament and patience. As a mother what you do not understand, if you’re asking me to run, is the toll it takes on the people around the president. It is a heavy ask. My children are graceful, wonderful, and they are champions to have made it through eight years alive on the other end of this. I am grateful.”

Prior to her sit-down with King, Obama also chatted with a select group of students at both Morehouse College and Spelman college in the Atlanta.

Groups Bringing National Reparations Debate To Detroit

(AP Photo)

DETROIT (AP) — Two national organizations pushing for federal legislation on reparations for descendants of African American slaves are bringing their agendas and messages to Detroit.

The Detroit-based Reparations Labor Union has scheduled a summit in June, which later the same week will be followed by the national conference for the Washington-based National Coalition of Blacks for Reparations in America, also known as N’Cobra.

Both events come as a national dialogue on reparations is underway and other issues related to race are attracting increasing attention. A number of Democratic candidates for president have come out in support of discussing some form of repayment to descendants of slaves. The U.S. has no reparations policy when it comes to African Americans, though legislation creating a study commission has been introduced in Congress.

But “the recognition of (reparations) has now gotten more validation,” said Jumoke Ifetayo, N’Cobra’s southeast regional representative. “I think that is going to help the movement. More and more people are saying ‘Hey, this really could happen in my lifetime.'”

The practice of bringing enslaved Africans to what would become the United States appears to have started in 1619 when about 20 slaves were brought to Jamestown, Virginia, then a British colony. Over the next two centuries, more than 300,000 men, women and children arrived in what is now the U.S. after being forcibly taken from Africa, according to the Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade Database. They primarily worked the fields and plantations in the southern colonies and later the Southern states.

Slavery in the U.S. officially ended in 1865 when the 13th Amendment was ratified. Union Army General William Sherman promised compensation to freed slaves in the form of land and mules to farm it — hence the phrase “40 acres and a mule” — after the North’s victory over the South in the Civil War. But President Andrew Johnson took away the offer.

More than 120 years later, then-Rep. John Conyers, a Detroit Democrat, first introduced H.R. 40. He reintroduced it in every congressional session until he resigned in 2017. Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee, a Texas Democrat, reintroduced the bill last year.

In April, presidential candidate and Democratic Sen. Cory Booker of New Jersey filed the Senate companion to H.R. 40.

Other candidates have shared their ideas in recent weeks.

Sen. Kamala Harris of California pledged to sign legislation creating a commission to study reparations. Sen. Bernie Sanders of Vermont prefers a broader policy on poverty, but said he would sign that reparations bill. Sen. Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts supports a congressional proposal to study a framework for reparations.

Beto O’Rourke, a former Texas congressman, has said he would support legislation that would create a reparations study commission.

“The proof is in the pudding with people signing on to (reparations) legislation and people actually endorsing the legislation,” said Ron Daniels, president of The Institute of the Black World 21st Century and convener of the National African American Reparations Commission, which has hearings and town hall meetings around the country.

“If the Democratic Party wants to continue to have black support it must hold to its word,” Daniels said.

But activists say Democratic politicians often take the black vote for granted. Anita Belle, a 58-year-old Detroit grassroots activist who founded the Reparations Labor Union in 2013, said the inactivity in Washington on reparations prompted her to file paperwork this year to run for president herself as a Democrat.

“This is our issue. If you want our vote, address our issue,” she said.

One of the biggest stumbling blocks to any reparations discussion is the massive amount of money that could be sought.

Coming up with some form of reparations would be complicated but not impossible, said Stan V. Smith, president of Smith Economics Group, a Chicago company that has given expert testimony on evaluating damages in court cases.

“Giving away land because the government has it has an appeal because (people receiving it) are basically saying ‘We don’t have to pay any money for it,'” Smith said.

But there is a problem with awarding federally owned land, he said.

“A lot of land doesn’t have value unless it’s developed,” Smith said. “Also, it would be difficult to find equal value of land for millions of people. How you might value an acre and how I might value an acre might be different.”

Paying reparations to millions of descendants of enslaved blacks also certainly would add to the U.S. debt, Smith said.

“We can increase the debt to a certain degree and pay for it over the years,” he said. “We’re a rich country and a productive country, but it does create stress on people who do pay taxes. We could also offer a menu to people where they could choose — some of it cash over time, some of it in land, some in terms of college education or tax credits.”

A more effective reparations policy would be to fix the capitalistic system behind the injustices and legacy of slavery, said Marlene Daut, associate professor of African Diaspora Studies and associate director of the Carter G. Woodson Institute at the University of Virginia.

“How much money would it take to make you feel better about slavery?” Daut said. “There is no amount. What matters more is what happened to people in the past and what is happening to them in the present. The only way to repair that is to end the capitalist system that made slavery possible and profitable.”

Former NFL Player Says He’s Innocent Of Stalking Violation

(Concord Police Department via AP)

CONCORD, N.H. (AP) — A judge set bail at $50,000 for a former New England Patriots player accused of violating a protective order.

Greg Spires says he is innocent in a video arraignment Monday from jail in Concord, New Hampshire.

The 44-year-old Spires, of Cypress, Texas, was a defensive end in the National Football League who played for the Patriots from 1998-2000. He remained in the NFL until 2007, playing one season for the Cleveland Browns and six for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

The Concord Monitor reports the stalking petition granted Thursday says Spires isn’t to be within 500 feet (152 meters) of his daughter.

His daughter says Spires showed up for her high school sporting event, even though she hasn’t seen or talked to him in years. Police say Spires went to the school Friday.

Officer Shoots And Kills Woman Claiming To Be Pregnant

A Baytown, Texas police officer fatally shot a woman as he attempted to arrest her at an apartment complex late Monday, KHOU 11 reports.

Witness video of the shooting was widely circulated on social media overnight. In the video, the woman can be heard shouting “I’m pregnant” multiple times before she is shot.

Lt. Steve Dorris with the Baytown Police Department said an officer was patrolling an apartment complex when he saw the 45-year-old woman, who he reportedly had previous encounters with. The officer said he knew the woman had outstanding warrants, so he approached her to arrest her, according to the police department’s Facebook page.

Witness video appears to show the woman on the ground when about five gunshots ring out. KHOU 11 chose to not show that unedited video at this time because it is very graphic, and it is unclear who originally recorded it.

Police said the officer attempted to render aid to the woman, but she died at the scene.

Savannah Police Mourn Sergeant Killed By Robbery Suspect

(Savannah Police Department via AP)

SAVANNAH, Ga. (AP) — Police Sgt. Kelvin Ansari had just arrived for his evening shift when he greeted Lt. Gregory Mitchell with a joke and laugh. A few hours later, the lieutenant was driving his co-worker’s wife to the hospital after Ansari got shot while responding to an armed robbery call.

Ansari, 50, didn’t survive.

The patrol sergeant’s fatal shooting late Saturday left his 500 fellow officers in the Savannah Police Department in stunned disbelief. They gathered Monday outside police headquarters — along with the mayor, district attorney, local judges and other officials — to lay bouquets of flowers atop a police SUV in memory of the fallen officers.

Mitchell had known Ansari for nearly a decade and was his direct supervisor in the Central Precinct that patrols neighborhoods to the south of Savannah’s downtown historic district.

“It’s almost unbelievable,” Mitchell said. “We’re trying to maintain because we still have a job to do … Our hearts are grieving. Our hearts are heavy.”

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation, the state’s top law enforcement agency, is investigating Ansari’s killing. A second officer, Douglas Thomas, was wounded by a gunshot to the leg. He attended the memorial event Monday in civilian clothes, dabbing tears as he stood at Mitchell’s side.

The suspected gunman, 49-year-old Edward Fuller III, also died after being shot by police.

The two officers were shot during a hunt for an armed robbery suspect who stole money late Saturday from a person leaving a barber shop, the GBI said in a news release. After committing the robbery, Fuller sat in a nearby vehicle “unknown to the officers,” the GBI said, when Ansari approached.

As the officer got close to the parked vehicle, the GBI said, Fuller got out and began shooting — striking both Ansari and Thomas. The bureau said Fuller fled to the backyard of a nearby home, where he was shot as he pointed a handgun at officers as they closed in on him.

Chatham County court records show Fuller had at least three prior felony convictions dating back to 1990, when he received probation after pleading guilty to auto theft and simple battery. In 2016, Fuller was sentenced to a year in jail after he pleaded guilty to cocaine possession and obstruction of an officer.

Savannah Police Chief Roy Minter said Ansari had worked in the department for 10 years. He became an officer after retiring from the Army after 21 years of military service. The fallen officer was married with four children, ages 5 to 25.

Sgt. Dana Purvis recalled working with Ansari when he was trainee. Within a decade he rose quickly through the ranks to become a patrol supervisor.

Purvis, Savannah’s officer in charge of security for special events, said Ansari was always quick to offer help during busy road races and other popular events such as the city’s sprawling St. Patrick’s Day parade.

Ansari also liked to help families in need in the neighborhoods he patrolled, Purvis said, like donating and wrapping gifts for children at Christmas.

“He was just always that sergeant that was always giving and caring,” Purvis said. “You could never say a bad word about him.”

Rape And Kidnapping Trial Begins For Ex-NFL Star Kellen Winslow II

Jury selection kicked off Monday in the trial of ex-NFL tight end Kellen Winslow II, who faces charges of rape, kidnapping and indecent exposure, CBS reports.

Winslow, 35, the son of former San Diego Chargers legend Kellen Winslow, allegedly raped two women in Encinitas, Calif., in 2018, as well as an unconscious teen girl in 2003, and exposed himself to an elderly woman at a gym earlier this year, the report states,

He is facing life imprisonment on those charges.

Here’s a break down of the case:

  • He is accused of raping a 17-year-old girl in 2003 at a home in Scripps Ranch.
  • He reportedly lured a 54-year-old transient — who was hitchhiking — into his Hummer for a ride, then raped her in March 2018.
  • Later that year in May, he kidnaped, raped and sodomized a 59-year-old homeless woman and threatened to kill her if she told anyone.

Winslow’s three separate cases have reportedly been combined into one for the trial.

He pleaded not guilty to all charges last year, but in March, while out on a $2 million bail and awaiting trial, he was arrested again for touching himself at a Carlsbad gym and groping a woman in a hot tub at the same gym.

He also faces charges of entering a mobile home where an 86-year-old woman was sleeping and another incident where he exposed himself to his 55-year-old neighbor while she was gardening in her yard.

At trial, his lawyers could argue a mental illness defense. His attorneys also want to exclude any evidence that Winslow watched pornography of “elders.” While CTE (Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy) has been discovered in many former NFL players it is unclear if Winslow has been diagnosed with the brain disease.

Eric Garner’s Mother Blasts ‘Tricks’ And ‘Lies’ At Trial For Her Son’s Killer [VIDEO]

UPDATED: 6:11 p.m. EDT — Eric Garner‘s mother was forced to watch the chokehold death of her son in an NYPD courtroom during the killer officer’s administrative trial on Monday. Gwen Carr used a break from the trial to talk to the press about the “tricks” that Daniel Pantaleo‘s lawyers were using.

“The day after Mother’s Day, to have to watch the video that the world saw of my son being killed, to be at this trial after five years, and to see all of the tricks that Pantaleo’s lawyers are trying to pull to avoid accountability, it’s really hard,” Carr said Monday afternoon.

RELATED: Police Officer In Eric Garner Case Goes On Trial

Carr also spoke about the “strength” that she has and needs to attend this trial, which was taking place nearly five years after Pantaleo killed Garner.

“All the lies and stuff that’s being portrayed up there,” Carr said Monday about the trial. “I’m just hoping I can I can stand up,” she added as her voice trailed off.

She credited her community leaders with where she gets her strength from.

Pantaleo has never been fired or even indicted for his role in the killing that was caught on video.

Original story:

New York City rush hour traffic was literally brought to a halt Monday morning ahead of administrative trial for the police officer who killed Eric Garner nearly five years ago. NYPD Officer Daniel Pantaleo, who has not only avoided being arrested for the flagrant killing caught on video but also managed to secure a lucrative salary boost in the interim, could be fired if found guilty.

In anticipation of the ruling, protesters took to a major highway in Manhattan to bring attention to something they say should have been done immediately following the death caused by the use of a chokehold that the NYPD bans its officers from using. A small handful of activists unfurled a banner in the middle of the busy southbound lanes of the FDR Drive to show the words reading “ERIC GARNER” followed by the declarative hashtag “#FIRE PANTALEO.”

The vantage point from a nearby highrise building showed the extent of the disruption in traffic. However, there were not any immediate reports of angry drivers, which could be an indication that even the typically temperamental motorists in the city’s five boroughs were sympathetic to what under normal circumstances would have been considered murder.

Meanwhile, nearby at the Police Department’s headquarters in Lower Manhattan, the courtroom was reportedly packed with standing room only ahead of the trial’s start. However, according to the New York Times, even though the trial was open to the public, its verdict may not be made public immediately. The decision “will be sent to the police commissioner, James P. O’Neill, who has the authority to uphold, modify or even vacate the ruling,” the Times reported.

Family members of past victims of police brutality by the NYPD were at the courtroom to offer support for Garner’s mother, Gwen Carr, according to a tweet from a local activist.

Pantaleo’s trial was coming about a month after the NYPD determined that Garner was not killed by a chokehold. That questionable decision could provide a hint at what to expect from Pantaleo’s trial.

Garner was approached by undercover NYPD officers on July 17, 2014, for the alleged offense of selling untaxed loose cigarettes. When officers failed at handcuffing him for the nonviolent misdemeanor, Pantaleo was caught on video with his arms wrapped tightly around Garner’s neck from behind. The chokehold ultimately killed Garner. The entire deadly episode was captured on cellphone video and filmed by a bystander. Garner’s final words “I can’t breathe” — became a rallying call for social justice advocates who saw his death as a murder.

The New York Police Department (NYPD) only began disciplinary proceedings against Officer Daniel Pantaleo in June of 2018.  A grand jury decided not to indict Pantaleo and the Department of Justice declined to bring a civil rights case against him.

Jailed For Voting, Crystal Mason May Lose Her Home

Despite social media posts over the weekend announcing Crystal Mason‘s release from prison for voting while on supervised release, her lawyer said that just wasn’t true. SiriusXM radio host Clay Cane, who has interviewed Mason and her lawyer multiple times, helped clear up the uncertainty.

RELATED CONTENT: Roland Martin On The Crystal Mason Case

“I exchanged emails w/ Crystal Mason’s lawyer & she has NOT been released,” Cane tweeted Monday morning. “She’s still in federal custody & serving the remaining 3 months at a halfway house. She’s now facing 5 yrs in state prison & at risk of losing her home.”

Cane included the link to a GoFundMe account started to raise funds for the mother of three who was also at risk of losing her home because of the inability to make mortgage payments while in prison.

Mason’s case is heartbreaking and a gross example of injustice in Texas. In November of 2016, she voted for Hillary Clinton in Fort Worth. She cast a provisional ballot, which wasn’t counted, and was told three months later she had committed voter fraud because she was on supervised released for the non-violent crime of tax fraud. After a long fight, she began to serve federal time and was facing an additional five years from the state of Texas.

There is a deep hypocrisy in how Mason is being treated, considering a white woman from Iowa named Terri Lynn Rote was convicted of voter fraud for purposely trying to cast a ballot for President Donald Trump twice. She was only sentenced to two years probation and a $750 fine.

In addition, the district attorney who prosecuted Mason, Sharen Wilson, reportedly asked her staff for personal contact information and then used it to solicit funds for her re-election bid, according to Appeal.org. Legal experts disagreed whether that was a criminal offense, but there is also ambiguity on if Mason actually broke the law or not—yet she was being punished harshly.

Mason has maintained that no one told her she couldn’t vote, nor did she sign anything saying she could not vote while on supervised release.

“I just feel like the whole system failed me,” she said.

Back in January, Alison Grinter released a statement to Cane that read in part, “It’s my firm belief that Tarrant County is continuing to harass Crystal. She became eligible to be transferred to a residential re-entry center in October of last year. However, Tarrant County issued a warrant for her arrest for a sewer violation related to one of her properties.”

Officer In Eric Garner Death Is Scapegoat, Lawyer Says

(AP Photo)

NEW YORK (AP) — The New York City police officer accused of using a banned chokehold in the July 2014 death of Eric Garner is being made a scapegoat in a politically charged atmosphere, a defense lawyer said Monday.

Video evidence shows Officer Daniel Pantaleo used an approved technique for restraining Garner, attorney Stuart London said at the officer’s disciplinary hearing, adding that the officer feared for his life when he felt Garner was trying to push him toward a plate glass window.

Garner was the unarmed black man whose pleas of “I can’t breathe” became a rallying cry against police brutality.

However, London said, it’s a misconception that the phrase was uttered when the officer’s hands were around Garner’s neck. It happened, he said, when officers were trying to handcuff Garner.

“We know he wasn’t choked out because he is speaking,” London said.

Garner’s mother and sister left the hearing room in tears as video was played of the arrest that led to his death.

The video was played as the man who took it, Ramsey Orta, testified from prison, where he is serving time for drug and weapon charges.

During cross-examination, Orta said Pantaleo’s arm wasn’t around Garner’s neck when he uttered, “I can’t breathe.”

Orta also backed off a claim he had made to internal affairs investigators two days after Garner’s death that Pantaleo had his knee on Garner’s back for five to 10 seconds. The video showed it was not on his back.

Pantaleo could face penalties ranging from the loss of vacation days to firing if he is found to have violated department rules. He denies wrongdoing.

A ruling last week requires that the police watchdog agency bringing the case prove not only that Pantaleo violated department rules, but also that his actions fit the criteria for criminal charges. Pantaleo does not face criminal charges.

He has been on desk duty since Garner’s death.

Teen Raped Woman Days After Bonding Out On Theft Charge

A 17-year-old is accused of raping a jogger in an Atlanta neighborhood, two days after he bonded out of jail on a theft charge.

According to The Atlanta Journal Constitution, D’Shawn Garrison faces six felonies after the two incidents.

On Sunday around 4 a.m., officers reportedly spotted a vehicle that was reported as stolen at gunpoint the night prior, according to an Atlanta police incident report obtained by AJC.com. Garrison is accused of driving the vehicle.

After a brief chase, Garrison jumped out of the car and ran before he was caught. Two juvenile girls, who were in the car, were also detained and reportedly charged with curfew violation.

Garrison, who was wearing an ankle monitor at the time of his arrest, faced a more serious charge: theft by receiving stolen property.

He was wearing an ankle monitor as a condition of a bond he received after being arrested on an armed robbery charge in Fulton County when he was 14, Channel 2 Action News reported.

On Tuesday, he posted bond and was released from the Fulton County jail, according to reports.

Around 9 a.m. Thursday, he was arrested again by officers after allegedly raping a 54-year-old woman who was jogging, police said. He’s accused of tearing her pants off and assaulting her on a front lawn along the street. A witness saw what was happening, helped stop the assault and reportedly held Garrison until officers arrived.

He was reportedly charged with rape, aggravated assault by strangulation, battery that caused substantial physical harm and interference with government property.  This time he was denied bond.

Mother Of Missing Texas Girl Heckled After Canceled Hearing

 (Houston Chronicle via AP)

HOUSTON (AP) — The mother of a missing 4-year-old Texas girl was heckled outside a courtroom on Monday by people who questioned if she had done enough to protect her daughter before her disappearance.

Brittany Bowens, Maleah Davis‘s mother, along with her spokesman, community activist Quanell X, showed up for a scheduled court hearing for Derion Vence, her former fiance who is charged in connection with the girl’s disappearance. The hearing was canceled, though, and Vence’s next hearing was scheduled for July 10. His attorney didn’t immediately reply to calls seeking comment.

Vence, 26, has been charged with tampering with evidence, specifically a human corpse, though Maleah is still missing and authorities have declined to say whether they believe she is dead or Vence may have killed her. Prosecutors, though, have said in court documents that Vence eventually could face additional charges, including murder.

Bowens declined to speak after the canceled hearing, but Quanell X told reporters that Bowens is focused on finding out what happened to her daughter.

“The main thing right now that all of us want to know is what did he do with Maleah,” he said. “Where is Maleah?”

As Quanell X spoke to reporters, he was drowned out by a group of people, including some family members of Maleah’s father who yelled “she let it happen” and “Brittany knew all along.”

Quanell X previously alleged that Vence might have abused Maleah and that Bowens should have told police about it.

Child Protective Services removed Maleah and her brothers from the apartment Vence and Bowens shared in August after the girl suffered a head wound, but the children were returned in February, according to an agency spokeswoman.

When asked by reporters why — if she had concerns about Vence — Bowens had left her daughter in Vence’s care while Bowens attended her father’s funeral out of state, Quanell X declined to comment, saying, “I’m not going to speak to that.”

As Bowens and Quanell X headed to an elevator, they were followed by the hecklers, who yelled, “Justice for Maleah” and “murderer.”

Tamisha Mendoza, a cousin of Maleah’s father, Craig Davis, said she questioned why Bowens stayed with Vence if she suspected he was hurting her daughter.

“You’re just as guilty as (Vence). She needs to be locked up along with him,” Mendoza said.

Craig Davis didn’t attend the scheduled hearing because “he is devastated” about what happened to his daughter, Mendoza said.

“Maleah was a happy little girl,” she said. “The things that happened to her, she didn’t deserve.”

According to police, Vence told officers that he, Maleah and his 2-year-old son were abducted on May 4 by a group of men in a truck. He said he and his son were freed the next day but the kidnappers kept Maleah and his silver Nissan Altima.

Police said Vence’s story kept changing and didn’t add up.

The Nissan was found on Thursday and trained dogs detected the scent of human decomposition in the trunk.

Vence was seen on surveillance video taking a large laundry basket with a trash bag as well as cleaning supplies from his apartment on May 3. A basket similar to the one seen on the surveillance video was found in the Nissan’s trunk.

Investigators also found blood in the hallway and bathroom of Bowens and Vence’s apartment. The blood is consistent with DNA samples taken from Maleah’s toothbrush, authorities said.

Pastor, Wife Fatally Shoot Alleged Burglar At Their Home And Then Went To Church

A Texas church pastor and his wife are making headlines after fatally shooting an alleged burglar they caught breaking into their west Houston home Saturday night.

Police said when the Rev. Jeff Powers, 52, and his wife, Julie Powers, 54, heard noises in the back of their home, both retrieved firearms and went to investigate. That’s when they allegedly saw a man forcing open their back door, ABC 13 reports.

“A preliminary investigation revealed the residents were asleep in their bed when they were awakened by a loud noise. While investigating the cause of the noise, they noticed their backyard gate was opened and saw a male (suspect) in their back yard,” police said in a statement released on Monday.

Booker Plays Up Vegas Connection In Crucial Nevada Caucus

LAS VEGAS (AP) — As Democratic presidential hopefuls hit the ground to woo voters in the early voting state of Nevada, many are touting how closely their home states align with the fast-growing tourist mecca. Few, though, can say it’s where they stop for mom’s home cooking.

Cory Booker rose to national fame as a New Jersey mayor and senator, but his mom and other relatives have lived in Las Vegas for years. Now, he’s working those local connections to set himself apart from the crowded pack in a state that could be decisive.

Nevada’s presidential caucus is the third of the early nominating contests for Democrats and is considered the first test of a candidate’s appeal before a diverse population and the first contest in the West. For those in the packed 2020 field who struggle to break through in Iowa and New Hampshire, it could be their last opportunity to rise.

On his recent swing through Las Vegas, Booker told voters over breakfast at a local Baptist church that he feels like “this is kind of a home for me because my mom lives here.”

He later told a 73-year-old voter that she could reach out to his mom across town to hold him accountable as president — a joke he repeated to another group of voters.

“I’ll give you my mom’s address,” Booker said. “If I misbehave, you can go talk to her.”

He made note of his mom’s home in Las Vegas as he campaigned 400 miles (644 kilometers) away in Reno and the town of Minden, and opened his first rally in the state this year with the same fact and a shout out to his Uncle Butch, who also lives in Las Vegas.

After attendees at the Las Vegas rally cheered for his mom, Booker told them it was wise move because “that might entitle you to come by her home here and get some of the best cornbread stuffing you have ever tasted.”

It remains to be seen whether the New Jersey senator’s local connections could give him an edge in Nevada, a state where most of the population was born somewhere else and out-of-town visitors to the glitzy casino attractions of Las Vegas are a welcome driver of the economy.

Republican Marco Rubio also tried to play up his local connections while running for president in 2016. Rubio in Nevada spoke about his childhood in Las Vegas, when his father worked at one of the city’s casinos and was active in the local casino-workers’ union. Despite highlighting his history in the city, the Florida senator’s connection failed to stop Donald Trump from a runaway win of the Nevada GOP caucuses.

“While it makes for a nice talking point and Rubio certainly played it up last cycle, I do not think it moves the needle for most voters,” David Damore, the chair of the political science department at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, said in an email. “Having a team that knows the state and can get a candidate in front of groups and interests with clout is much more important.”

While Booker’s Vegas connections isn’t the overriding message of his campaign here, it is a frequent part of his pitch as he weaves through points about home and community. The senator has tried to draw similar links in Iowa, pointing out to those who vote first on the presidential nominee that his grandmother was born in Des Moines and he still has family in the state.

The New Jersey senator told The Associated Press in an interview that he doesn’t consider himself a local in Las Vegas, but he’s been coming to the city since he was a child and got to know it better as an adult when his grandparents moved to the city and then his parents, shortly before his father’s death in 2013.

“In the same way that I feel connected to where family is, that’s why I feel so connected here,” Booker said. “It’s because I associate it with my grandparents, both of whom passed away here; my father, who passed away here; and then the decades of coming here for the best cooking I know, which is home cooking.”

Donna West, the chair of the Las Vegas-based Clark County Democratic Party, said she doesn’t know if Las Vegas Democrats would consider Booker a local, but the senator knows the community well and it could translate into some extra support.

“I frequently hear of a Cory sighting at a barber shop or a restaurant or a church,” West noted.

Alexis Merz, a Las Vegas native and the president of Las Vegas Urban League Young Professionals, said it’s possible that people who run into Booker out in the community might take a closer look at his candidacy, but his Vegas ties didn’t strike a chord with her.

Merz, whose organization helped arrange a campaign visit with Booker in April at a barbershop in west Las Vegas, said the senator’s personality and values speak much louder than his local connection.

“If he had been raised here, like born and raised here, it might be different,” Merz said. “It’s still a cool connection but not enough to win Vegas or even the state of Nevada.”

Minnesota Teacher On Leave After Calling Her Middle School Students The N-Word

via Bossip.com:

A middle school teacher in Minnesota has been placed on leave after a video showing her using a racial slur while speaking to students went viral, according to the district earlier this week.

Saint Paul Public Schools Superintendent Joe Gothard promised to take aggressive action after footage was posted online of teacher Wendy Brilowski using the N-word toward her Highland Park Middle School students.

Brilowski can be heard saying ” f—— n——” in the video, which the district verified as being authentic to NBC News. Another staff member tried to excuse the behavior, saying, “she’s repeating what you’re saying” after the slur was used, but the short video clip does not show any students speaking prior to the teacher’s comments.

The district did not provide more detail on the context of what happened before or after the video was taken, but did confirm the incident occurred during school hours.  Gothard also apologized in a video to parents, adding that foul and racist language has no place in the district.

“As educators, we have to be held to a higher standard and we know that this situation represents a failure on our part,” Gothard said. “And we will not fall silent in the face of racism in our schools.”

Brandy Coleman, the mother of one of the students, told NBC-affiliate KARE that the video was the boiling point of tensions between Brilowski and her daughter that had been simmering over the past couple of months. According to her daughter, the teacher had previously called her and other students “negroes,” the mother told KARE.

“It breaks my heart that I didn’t know the magnitude of the situation so that I could intervene before that video,” Coleman said.

Connecticut Man Accused Of Threatening To Kill Trump

(AP Photo)

NEW HAVEN, Conn. (AP) — A Connecticut man has been indicted on charges that he threatened to kill President Donald Trump and sent letters he claimed contained anthrax.

Gary Joseph Gravelle of New Haven faces charges including conveying false information about an explosive and threats against the president.

Authorities say 51-year-old Gravelle last year sent letters addressed to Trump, the Islamic Center of New London and other places that contained a white powdery substance with messages such as “you die.” Some of the letters appeared to contain baby powder.

Officials say Gravelle also made bomb threats at a variety of locations.

He has been in custody since he was arrested in September for violating the terms of his supervised release. He was previously convicted in 2013 of sending threatening letters.

It was not immediately clear on Sunday whether he has an attorney.

Following Arrests, Walton Gets Another Chance With Dolphins

(AP Photo)

MIAMI (AP) — Running back Mark Walton, arrested three times this offseason by police in Miami, has signed with his hometown Dolphins.

Walton tried out this week, when coach Brian Flores said he was aware of the legal issues.

“I think people deserve a second chance,” Flores said Saturday. “I don’t want to judge people based on one incident, two incidents.”

Walton was drafted in the fourth round a year ago by the Cincinnati Bengals and played mostly on special teams in 2018. They released him in April shortly after he was arrested on charges of reckless driving, marijuana possession and carrying a concealed weapon.

Walton also was arrested in February on a battery charge after police say he got into an argument about a parking situation. He was charged with marijuana possession in January.

How Kamala Harris’ Mother Inspired Her Run For President

NEW YORK (AP) — Speaking from the Senate floor for the first time, Kamala Harris expressed gratitude for a woman on whose shoulders she said she stood. In her autobiography, Harris interspersed the well-worn details of her resume with an extended ode to the one she calls “the reason for everything.” And taking the stage to announce her presidential candidacy , she framed it as a race grounded in the compassion and values of the person she credits for her fighting spirit.

Though a decade has passed since Shyamala Gopalan died, she remains a force in her daughter’s life and her White House bid. Again and again in the campaign, those who gather around the California senator are hearing mention of the diminutive Indian immigrant the candidate calls her single greatest influence.

“She’s always told the same story,” says friend Mimi Silbert. “Kamala had one important role model, and it was her mother.”

Her mother gave her an early grounding in the civil rights movement and injected in her a duty not to complain but rather to act. And that no-nonsense demeanor on display in Senate hearings over special counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation, Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh and more? Onlookers can credit, or blame, Gopalan, a crusader who raised her daughter in the same mold.

Appearing in New York recently, Harris said there were two reasons she was running for president. The first, she said, was a sense of duty to restore truth in justice in the country at an inflection point in history. The second: a mother who responded to gripes with a challenge.

“She’d say, ‘Well, what are you going to do about it?'” Harris told the crowd. “So I decided to run for president of the United States.”

Harris’ parents met as doctoral students at the University of California, Berkeley at the dawn of the 1960s. Her father, a Jamaican named Donald Harris, came to study economics. Her mother studied nutrition and endocrinology.

Backlash Against Author Who Posted DC Metro Worker Eating On Train

WASHINGTON (AP) — A writer on the verge of releasing her debut novel is facing a backlash after she posted a picture on Twitter of a public transit worker eating on a train and reported details about the woman to her bosses.

Natasha Tynes apologized a day later on Twitter and deleted her post before making her account private, but the publishing house distributing her novel dropped her and her publisher delayed the planned release of the book.

The response to Friday’s post was almost immediate, with people upset that Tynes, who is Jordanian American and has called herself a “minority writer,” would shame a black woman and possibly cause her to lose her job.

Tynes’ post showed the woman in her work uniform eating on the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority train. The authority doesn’t allow drinking or eating on its trains and buses, although officials on Wednesday had advised police officers to stop issuing tickets for those violations.

“When you’re on your morning commute & see @wmata employee in UNIFORM eating on the train I thought we were not allowed to eat on the train. This is unacceptable. Hope @wmata responds,” Tynes wrote.

When the authority’s Twitter account reached out for more information, Tynes replied with the time, the train and the direction it was traveling, The Washington Post reported.

Tynes “did something truly horrible today in tweeting a picture of a metro worker eating her breakfast on the train this morning and drawing attention to her employer. Black women face a constant barrage of this kind of inappropriate behavior directed toward them and a constant policing of their bodies,” Tynes’ publishing house, Rare Birds Books, said in a statement.

Tynes’ publisher, California Coldblood, also issued a statement, saying “we do not condone her actions and hope Natasha learns from this experience that black women feel the effects of systematic racism the most and that we have to be allies, not oppressors.”

The publisher said it was postponing the release of Tynes’ novel “while we further discuss appropriate next steps to officially cancel.” The novel, “They Called Me Wyatt,” is about a murdered Jordanian student whose consciousness ends up in the body of a baby boy who as an adult tries to figure out what happened with her death.

When The Associated Press called Tynes on Sunday, she said “no thank you, I’m not going to comment.”

Metro officials didn’t respond to questions about whether the employee faced any discipline.

An official with the union for Metro workers said the woman was taking a meal break while going from one job to another.

Metro operators have “an average of 20 minutes to consume a meal and get to their next access point to ensure all buses and trains are on time, safe, and ready to serve the riding public,” said Barry Hobson, the chief of staff for the Metro workers union, Amalgamated Transit Union Local 689.

Hobson’s statement referenced a Wednesday email from the Metro Transit police chief telling officers to stop writing tickets for fare evasion, eating, drinking, spitting and playing music without headphones until further notice.

“Understanding this email, our operator clearly was doing no wrong,” Hobson’s statement said.
