Rapper and Fyre Festival Co-Founder Ja Rule Reportedly in Tax Trouble

Ja Rule may be in tax trouble once again. The rapper and Fyre Festival co-founder, born as Jeffrey Atkins, reportedly owes the IRS more than $2 million in back federal taxes on liens over the course of a decade. According to an exclusive report from Bossip, public documents show that the IRS issued a lien for $443,442 for back taxes from income that the hip-hop star earned in 2016. A separate lien issued on March 4 shows that he also owes back taxes from 2005 through 2008, bringing his total amount owed to a whopping $2,031,753. His wife, Aisha, is also named on the liens obtained by Bossip.

The 43-year-old rapper was sentenced to 28 months in federal prison back in 2011 for tax evasion after admitting that he did not file taxes on more than $1.1 million in income over a period of five years, reported CNN.

From 2004 through 2008, Atkins received royalties from ASJA Inc. and performance income from Rule Tours Inc., but failed to file returns that would have mandated he pay the government $1,137,912, the release said. Though he pleaded guilty to charges related only to the first three years, he will pay back taxes and penalties for all five.

Atkins served the prison term concurrently with a sentence for gun possession. At the time, he said one of his biggest regrets was being separated from his children. “I’ve got three kids,” he said. “If there was anything that I regret, I regret that they have to go through this with me, and I’m not going to be there for them.”

In 2017, Atkins teamed up with notorious serial entrepreneur Billy McFarland to create the Fyre Festival, which was marketed as a luxurious music fest and beach getaway on a private island but turned out to be a complete sham. The highly-anticipated and expensive event was advertised by social media influencers like Kendall Jenner as an immersive art and musical experience. However, attendees paid up to $12,000 a ticket for cheese sandwiches and were forced to sleep in tents.

Although Atkins had not responded to the liens by April 15, he shared photos on Instagram of himself and his wife celebrating their 18-year anniversary in Thailand.

Hennessy Launches $10 Million Fund for HBCU Graduate Students

The Thurgood Marshall College Fund (TMCF) and Hennessy have partnered up to launch of the Hennessy Fellows Program, a $10 million graduate scholarship initiative designed to equip the next generation of African American leaders through financial assistance, access, and real-world skill application. The Hennessy Fellows program is designed to create a diverse pipeline of highly qualified talent over the next 10 years and flood the market with young leaders from historic black colleges and universities (HBCUs) who are fully prepared to take on leadership roles at major organizations.

“When such a tremendously successful global brand like Hennessy invests in a higher education non-profit like ours, it tells the world that HBCUs and PBIs have value and are worth investing in, and TMCF is the best steward to carry out such a monumental investment,” said Dr. Harry L. Williams, president & CEO of the Thurgood Marshall College Fund in a statement.

So how does an HBCU graduate student gain access to the funding? Following a thorough application process, the Hennessy Fellows Program will select ten high-achieving, high-potential students per year and offer them financial aid to assist their education opportunities.

Recipients will be awarded financial assistance towards collegiate graduate level education programs, as well as curated corporate development experiences, including training forums and networking to enhance the exchange of ideas and provide direct exposure to the inter-relatedness of corporate, social and economic systems.

The program is open to students enrolled in accredited HBCU or PBI graduate programs, and offers the following:

1:1 executive coaching
Up to $20,000 per academic year
$10,000 annual stipend for other educational expenses
Opportunity to compete for a community-related project grant up to $10,000
Access to online training forums, boot camps, networking events, and professional development experiences

“This is major, and it can’t be overlooked as just a financial contribution, it is a real partnership that is a game changer for the students and our community,” continued Williams.

Hennessy Fellows will accept applications through May 5, 2019. The 10 selected fellows will be announced in June to receive benefits ahead of the Fall 2019 term.

Trump’s 2020 Budget Would Be A Recipe of Disaster for Black Businesses

Small black-owned businesses, among the nation’s most rapidly growing firms in recent years, could be hindered by President Trump’s budget cuts, entrepreneur advocates say.

U.S. Sen. Ben Cardin (D-MD) recently stated that the Trump Administration’s fiscal 2020 budget could cost small businesses millions in additional loan fees owed to the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) and reduce critical business counseling. He and organizations like the U.S. Black Chambers (USBC) are concerned that the proposed budget will burden the SBA, which black and other minority-owned firms often turn to for capital and support to help grow their businesses. For instance, the uptick of black-women owned businesses helped the SBA achieve double-digit dollar gains in 2018 in loan approvals for those firms, BLACK ENTERPRISE reported.

A senior administration official stated the SBA’s total new request in the president’s FY2020 budget is $820 million. He added that amount is offset by fiscally responsible proposals to provide the SBA the flexibility to adjust existing fee structure across its business loan guarantee programs. The adjustments mean the SBA could have an actual operating budget of $665 million next year, a 5% reduction from its annualized budget for 2019.

Last fall, President Trump directed federal agencies to identify how they can cut a nickel out of every dollar they spend, the spokesman said. He mentioned hard-working American families make these sorts of tough decisions every day. The president believes Washington should be no different.

The USBC, serving roughly 250,000 small businesses, recently called Trump’s budget “a low blow to black business progress.” The potential budget cuts come after the most recent U.S. government shutdown hurt small businesses. One report claims over $2 billion in SBA loans were deferred to those firms tied to the shutdown.

The SBA’s 7(a) Loan Program, the agency’s primary and most common lending program, approved 696 loans for just over $166.7 million for African American women businesses, up 3% in the number of loans and a 20% jump in dollar amount in the fiscal year 2018 from 2017. Businesses can use loans from that program for multiple purposes, including working capital, acquiring land or purchasing equipment. When the SBA announced last October its fiscal year 2018 lending numbers, the agency revealed it guaranteed over $30 billion to small businesses that otherwise would not have had access to capital. The activity included over 72,000 approved loans.

Cardin, a ranking member of the U.S. Senate Committee on Small Business & Entrepreneurship, stated Trump’s fiscal year 2020 budget proposes these cuts to programs that benefit small businesses:

A 23% cut to funding for Small Business Development Centers. The centers offer counseling to U.S. small businesses, allowing them to improve their capacity and increase their productivity;
Higher loan fees on the thousands of businesses participating in the SBA’s loan programs, leading to increased borrowing costs for small, local businesses seeking to grow.
A five percent cut to the SBA’s Microloan program, and a 19% cut to the agency’s Microloan Technical Assistance program, both of which disproportionately serve women, minority and rural small businesses.

Cardin says for small businesses, which operate on razor-thin margins, the budget is bad for business. “On the heels of a month-long government shutdown that cost small businesses billions of dollars, this budget is another sign that small businesses are not a priority, but an afterthought, for the Trump Administration.”

USBC President Ron Busby called the budget a “recipe for disaster” for small business owners in a statement. “As the voice of the nation’s Black business owners, we are unequivocally against Trump’s proposed budget cuts and see it as a threat to Black business progress. Black entrepreneurs remain the fastest growing population in the small business community, yet continues to endure a government that stifles small business progress.”

Likewise, Nydia Velazquez, (D-NY), the House Small Business Committee Chairwoman, blasted Trump’s 2020 budget for cutting funding for the SBA, a critical resource for entrepreneurs. “The President is proposing a 5 percent cut to the Small Business Administration, doing so by reducing funds to proven entrepreneurial development initiatives. At the same time as it seeks to enact these cuts, the budget also would raise fees on small businesses that access capital through the SBA.”

Meet Radio Industry Vet and Community Leader Patricia Robinson

When Patricia Robinson walked into the Emmis Communications office in New York for an informational interview in 2000, she had no idea the media conglomerate owned some of the most iconic radio stations in the New York market. “When I got to the 7th floor, I was greeted with three logos on the window and the logos were Hot 97, Kiss FM, and CD 101.9,” she told BLACK ENTERPRISE. “Because I didn’t do my homework, I did not understand that Emmis Communications was the parent company of all of these amazing music brands.” Robinson also had no idea that particular interview would be the start of her 17-year ascension in broadcast media.

Before joining Emmis, Robinson worked full-time as a business accountant payable manager at a meat warehouse, but she desperately wanted change. “It just got really frustrating that I had to literally walk past slabs of meat, like the Rocky movie,” she said. “At that point, I just decided that I needed to change jobs.” That prompted her to send out her resume, which ended up in the hands of a sales manager at Emmis, who called her in for an informational interview. Despite not knowing anything about the company and lacking a college degree, Robinson made a great impression during the interview and eventually landed a business office position about six months later. “One of the things that I was able to master in that interview…was knowing what my strengths were. I knew that I was really good at math and able to produce results,” she said, adding that she had come prepared with reference letters and a portfolio highlighting her career achievements. “That was my magic secret.”

Although things were going well at her new job, her first performance review took her by surprise. “99% of that review was absolutely incredible because my work ethic was really solid,” she said. However, “when I got down to the very last line, it said, ‘Patricia is a great asset to this organization, the only limitation is that she does not have a degree.’”

Those words haunted her for weeks. “I took it personally. I could not stop focusing on this one line,” she said. “I toiled with it a little while” before taking action. “Being a full-time mom of two kids, a full-time worker, and being married, I decided to enroll [in college] at night to get an Associate’s Degree.” Two years later, she proudly showcased her degree to her manager, knowing that a lack of education would never be held against her again. She later furthered her education, earning a Bachelor’s in Business & Finance and a Masters of Management & Human Resources, both from the University of Phoenix.

Now, almost two decades later, Robinson currently works as the Director of Operations for Hot 97 (WQHT 97.1FM), 107.5 WBLS, and 1190 AM WLIB, where she plays a critical role in supporting operations management with a focus on employee relations, personnel administration, recruiting, building and facility management, and FCC reporting. She also plays a significant role in the annual Hot 97 Summer Jam, one of the largest hip hop concerts in the world. In past years, she recruited volunteers from non-profit organizations like City Year, the Veterans Aid Society, and the New York Urban League to assist with organizing the festivities. “She helps keep us rooted in the community and constantly stays on the forefront of our efforts to impact our listeners’ lives positively both on and off air,” Skip Dillard, the operations manager at WBLS and WLIB, told BE in an email. “She’s also a Linkedin wizard and attends job fairs and constantly talks to people she believes should be working for us in the future.”

Outside of work, Robinson is dedicated to giving back and helping her community. She is involved with and supports several programs in the tristate area, including the New York Police Department’s “My School Has Rhythm Not Violence” and the NYC Department of Youth & Community Development. She also serves as the Executive Director for Colin Kaepernick’s “Know Your Rights Camp,” an organization that raises awareness on higher education, self-empowerment, and instruction to properly interact with law enforcement in various scenarios. “Having [youth] understand how to interact with police and law enforcement is absolutely critical,” she said. In her role, she works directly with Kaepernick and a team to coordinate camps to empower inner-city youth through social activism, education, financial literacy, law advocacy, health and wellness, and community leadership. According to her, empowering others is something she sees as a personal “responsibility” to keep them informed about “issues that will affect their existence, whether it’s discrimination, equity, [or] fair and equal treatment.”

Robinson, who has established herself as an influential leader in the broadcast media industry and is recognized for her community work and social activism engagement, credits her success, in part, to colleagues like Bob Slade, the longtime host of WBLS’ Open Line public affairs show who died last month from kidney disease at the age of 70. “I had the pleasure to work with Bob for my entire tenure,” she said. “Not only was he a respected journalist and on-air personality, he was a dear friend to me.” He also helped her learn, grow, and push herself into becoming “a viable force in the media industry as a black woman.”

Through it all, Robinson says the most rewarding part of her career has been “the ability to impact others through my work.” She also prides herself on “the ability to be the example of excellence in the eyes of a lot of young women and young men” along with “the ability to connect people to opportunities and open doors where I can.”
