Gabrielle Union leaving her post as judge on ‘America’s Got Talent’

Despite her popularity, Gabrielle Union will not to return to America’s Got Talent after just one season. Fellow judge, Julianne Hough will also not be returning.

Union and Hough made their debuts as AGT judges earlier this year replacing longtime judges Mel B and Heidi Klum. According to NBC New York, despite their unexpected exit, the pair have projects of their own to focus on with Union returning to the Bad Boys spin-off series L.A.’s Finest. The series debuted last summer with Union reprising her role as “Syd,” whom she played in the 2003 hit film Bad Boys II, alongside co-star Jessica Alba.

According to People, Union described her first season on AGT as “emotional.”

“It’s emotional for me to watch people come so close to their dreams coming true and being so close,” she admitted. “Seeing their faces contort and anguish in pain, I don’t like it. I don’t find that entertaining.”

READ MORE: Janelle Monáe stars in ‘Antebellum’ teaser from producers of ‘Us’ and ‘Get Out’

Union also described a moment during her time as judge where she was truly touched by a contestant; Kodi Lee, who is blind and has autism, gave a breath-taking performance during AGT‘s last season and went on to be crowned the season 14 winner. Union called Lee an inspiration and hoped his win would help others.

“Hopefully, it’s going to be a little easier for parents with special needs children to get the resources that they need,” she said. “All of them can get the chance for their dreams to come true and for them to reach their fullest potential.”

People reported that long-time judges Simon Cowell and Howie Mandel, as well as Terry Crews, who made his debut as AGT host last season, will be returning next season. As of Sunday, neither Union nor Hough have commented on their exit from the show and there is no word on who will be their replacements for the 15th season of the show.

Star Georgia women’s college basketball student charged with murder

A college athlete has been charged in the murder of an Atlanta man who was found dead in front of an apartment complex earlier this year.

According to the Atlanta Journal Constitution, Kennesaw State University women’s basketball point guard Kamiyah Street was arrested on Thursday. She was charged with murder, three counts of felony murder, criminal attempt to commit armed robbery, two counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony.

The AJC reports that on July 16,  21-year-old Nashiem Hubbard-Etienne was found shot to death in the parking deck of the Heritage Station. At the time of the crime, police described the shooting as being targeted. As of Sunday, investigators have not disclosed a possible motive or whether or not Street and Hubbard-Etienne knew each other.

READ MORE: All harassment charges against Lakers center DeMarcus Cousins dropped

Prior to Street’s recent arrest, the Mays High School graduate averaged 21 points and 5 rebounds through the team’s first four games of her junior season, according to the AJC.

“The individual has been suspended indefinitely from all women’s basketball team and athletic activities,” KSU Assistant Athletic Director of Communications David Beall told AJC. “Neither the university nor the athletic department have any additional information at this time.”

In addition to Street, police announced on Sunday that four additional people have been charged in Hubbard-Etienne’s death. According to AJC, Cortez Banks, Johnerton Gilstrap and Tobias Wells are in custody, but Dontacus Brantley is still at large and wanted for arrest.

Street’s arrest comes after former Clark Atlanta University student Jordyn Jones was arrested in the death of her roommate and fellow CAU student Alexis Crawford. According to CNN, Jones and her boyfriend Barron Brantley killed Crawford on Oct. 31, put her body in a bin and dumped it in an Atlanta park. Jones was recently denied bond when the judge determined that she would be a serious flight risk. Brantley was also denied bond.

24-Year-Old Bejay Mulenga Helps Fortune 500 Companies Engage With Gen Z

Bejay Mulenga, a 24-year-old entrepreneur, plays an important role in connecting Fortune 500 companies to Gen Z, according to Forbes.

Mulenga’s latest venture Supa Network has provided services to some of the world’s most influential brands, and he works with these companies to suggest some key advice on how they can best connect, recruit, and understand the next generation of young people.

As advertised on the Supa Network Twitter account, “Supa Talent connects businesses with super-talented humans through reach campaigns, recruitment programmes and retention strategies. Supa Network is the conduit between brands and young creative talent. Our little black book is not so little and very colourful.”

A young Mulenga registered his business under the name “Supa Tuck” in 2012. The United Kingdom-based entrepreneur started to organize speaking engagements at a number of schools sharing his tips on how students could turn their grades around. He would also share his business idea and presented it as an opportunity for students to develop entrepreneurial skills. Within four years, Mulenga had worked with more than 5,000 students and had even been invited to Downing Street—the London address of the official residences and offices of the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom—to meet Lord Young, Enterprise Advisor to former Prime Minister David Cameron.

“As a young black boy from London, I never envisioned being invited to Downing Street,” he tells Forbes. The invitation to Downing Street was followed by a speech delivered at the Conservative Party conference, at just 19 years of age to discuss enterprise for young people.

Supa Network brings all of Mulenga’s business endeavors under one roof, spanning creative content production, event production, Gen Z marketing, influencer marketing, and recruitment for large companies. It is comprised of three in-house brands:

  • SupaSpaces, focusing on bespoke events and workshops
  • SupaNetwork Creative, focusing on content production for online, social, video, and performance artists
  • SupaInsight, a consultancy for brands and client, providing insight and support on areas such as recruitment and how to effectively engage with younger generations

Supa Network has worked with global powerhouses such as Facebook; the highlight was training 3,000 people in the last 12 months on digital skills.

Here’s Why Black Borrowers Are Struggling to Repay Student Loan Debt

Black students, especially those who live in low-income areas, are struggling more with student loan debt than their white counterparts, according to economic researchers at the Federal Reserve Bank of New York. In other words, the weight of student loans is heavier on black Americans.

There are many factors in play, according to the report by CBS News, including how many black students take out student loans in the first place, how much those students are borrowing, and their earning potential post-graduation—which directly affects their ability to repay the loans.

The research done by economists shows that black neighborhoods tend to be equated with more student loans: “borrowing rates are somewhat higher in areas with a majority of black residents, at 23%, compared with 17% in Hispanic-majority ZIP codes and 14% in white-majority ZIP codes.”

It also revealed that once black students graduated, they leave with a higher loan bill than other racial groups. In low-income areas, which are more likely to be predominantly black, student loans average more than $37,000. However, white students have an average of $34,000.

Even more jarring about these findings is that researchers also found that black borrowers are twice as likely to default on their student loans, at 18% compared to 9% of white borrowers.

One of the main reasons behind this is the disparity of income in terms of race. Black Americans earn lower incomes relative to other racial groups. As a result, they don’t have as much money available to dedicate to payments in order to lower their student loan debt.

In terms of racial division in income, black students tend to make less money in their first post-graduate jobs, on top of the median household income being lower in black households than white households. These are contributing factors as to why paying off student loans is so difficult for black Americans.

Five MIT students named 2020 Rhodes Scholars

Ali Daher, Claire Halloran, Francisca Vasconcelos, Billy Anderson Woltz, and Megan Yamoah have been selected for the 2020 cohort of the prestigious Rhodes Scholarship program. They will begin fully funded postgraduate studies at Oxford University in the U.K. next fall. Each year, Rhodes awards 32 scholarships to U.S. citizens plus additional scholarships reserved for non-U.S. citizens.

Halloran, Vasconcelos, Woltz, and Yamoah will join the 2020 American Rhodes Scholar class. Daher was awarded the Rhodes Scholarship for Syria, Jordan, Lebanon and Palestine.

The MIT students were supported by MIT’s Office of Distinguished Fellowships and the Presidential Committee on Distinguished Fellowships. “It has been a gift to work with all of our applicants, and we are especially gratified when the Rhodes committee sees in them the same traits that we value so highly — not just academic excellence, but also thoughtfulness, creativity, initiative, and moral character,” says Professor Tamar Schapiro, who co-chairs the committee along with Professor Will Broadhead.

Ali Daher

Ali Daher, from Amman, Jordan, is a senior majoring in mechanical engineering with a concentration in biomedical engineering. At Oxford, he will pursue an advanced degree in research science engineering. Daher’s Rhodes Scholarship was announced Nov. 15

Claire Halloran

Hailing from Wauwatosa, Wisconsin, Claire Halloran is a senior majoring in materials science and engineering with minors in energy studies and public policy. At Oxford, Halloran will pursue an MSc in energy systems and a Master of Public Policy. She aspires to become a policy leader who will advocate for legislature that is both technically sound and appropriate for wider social contexts.

Halloran is dedicated to creating clean-energy technologies, advocating for strong climate policy, and disseminating knowledge about climate change. Her research has focused on solar energy technologies, including a project on solar-to fuel conversion reactors for concentrated solar systems with the Electrochemical Materials Laboratory in the MIT Department of Materials Science and Engineering, and an independent research project on silicon and perovskite photovoltaics. During a spring study abroad semester at Oxford, Halloran worked on high-energy-density battery design with the Faraday Institution SOLBAT Project, and this past summer she interned at Form Energy, a startup focused on creating low-cost, long-lasting batteries.

Halloran has interned with the Environmental Defense Fund and held climate policy fellowships with Our Climate and the Better Future Project. On campus, she founded and directs the MIT Climate Action Team, which works to organize the MIT community in support of policies to mitigate climate change. Halloran also holds an executive position and serves as a peer educator with the MIT Violence Prevention and Response team, facilitating peer conversations about sexual violence and healthy relationships.

Jay-Z Buys Back Intellectual Property For Rocawear For $15 Million

It’s The Roc! According to Financial PostShawn “Jay-Z” Carter has bought back the intellectual property of his fashion brand Rocawear.

New York-based Iconix Brand Group stated in a regulatory filing last week that it had sold certain intellectual property assets to Jay-Z’s Roc Nation L.L.C. and membership interests in his Marcy Media L.L.C. for $15 million as part of the settlement reached, which included two lawsuits and an arbitration proceeding.

Last week’s filing comes more than two years after Iconix filed a lawsuit against Jay-Z and his Roc Nation brand, and Major League Baseball Properties, among others. They alleged that by the selling of “Roc Nation” baseball caps, they were running afoul of the 2007 licensing agreement in which Roc Nation granted Iconix exclusive rights to manufacture and sell specific types of goods bearing the name of Rocawear, the clothing brand that Jay-Z and Damon Dash launched in 1999.

Iconix accused Jay-Z of infringing on trademarks it acquired a decade earlier through its $204 million purchase of Rocawear, arguing in its complaint that the Roc Nation-branded baseball caps fell within the scope of the parties’ licensing deal and by selling the hats, “Carter and his various companies … have deliberately undermined a series of agreements, after receiving millions in substantial compensation from Plaintiffs, by continuing to use and exploit in business the very property already conveyed to Iconix and Studio IP by contract.”

The agreement ends that suit, filed in April 2017 in the federal court in Manhattan. It also resolves a private arbitration related to that sale and a July 2019 lawsuit Jay-Z filed in a New York state court in Manhattan which accused Iconix of fraudulently doing business with Roc Nation as part of a “colossal accounting scandal.”

Iconix said last week that it took a $5.5 million charge after agreeing in principle to resolve a U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission probe into its writedowns. Both sides also agreed to drop all claims against each other, without admitting wrongdoing or unlawful conduct.

Although Jay-Z earned $81 million and was crowned as hip-hop’s first billionaire earlier this year, he still wound up in second place behind his mentee and “younger brother” Kanye West. Earlier this year, the NFL announced a long-term partnership with Roc Nation, Carter’s sports and entertainment agency, as the league’s official Live Music Entertainment Strategists. The partnership, which went into effect at the start of the 2019-20 season, will serve to strengthen community through music and the NFL’s Inspire Change initiative.

The ACLU states being stopped by a police officer is a “stressful experience” and the Handbook provides details the way for youth to be able to control your own actions. “Even when you do everything right, things can still go wrong. These tips can help you protect yourself,” the website reads.

“Black children often have to be adults,” ACLU Campaigns Manager Melekte Melaku said. “They have to navigate these encounters and have this information on hand in a split second where they might be scared of what’s happen next.

“We want to make sure we’re giving kids the tools that they need, while acknowledging that it’s not fair that young people have to walk around and fear for their safety like they still do in Cleveland.”

Essence Atkins opens up about working with Bill Cosby and #MeToo movement: “The dynamics get really muddy”

Long before she was heating up the small screen on OWN’s steamy series Ambitions, Essence Atkins was a sitcom staple on shows like Half & Half and Smart Guy.

The actress got her start with a guest role on The Cosby Show, and credits Bill Cosby with setting her on the path to success.

“It was my very first audition. Mr. Cosby himself is one of the reasons that I am here. He really saw something in me and gave me an opportunity to be on the show and brought me back and then I later worked for him on another show called Here and Now, which was Malcom Jamal Warner‘s spin-off show.”

Although Bill Cosby is currently serving prison time for sexual assault and has been accused of numerous other crimes against women, Atkins’ experiences with him were nothing but positive.

“I had a perfectly lovely experience the entire time. I never had anything happen to me that he has been convicted or accused of so I am very fortunate in that sense. The hard part for me of what has happened is the disparity in which justice is dispensed when it comes to similar crimes and accusations,” she continues.

“We have people in positions of power right now who have multiple accusations of sexual assault and violence and they’re still enjoying the benefits of all that power and there is no consequence for them as of yet and that is the thing that is really disheartening for me. Let’s make justice indeed bling and let’s make sure there’s equality and equanimity in how we dispense justice.”

She also revealed the struggle to contend with the dynamic between men and women win Hollywood in light of the #MeToo movement. According to Atkins, the lines between socializing and securing opportunities in Tinseltown can be blurred pretty easily, creating precarious situations for women.

“When you’re an attractive woman and you get invited to be a part of mixer or go out and grab a drink and have a conversation and talk about future projects and working together; you want to say yes because you want to capitalize not he opportunity but you don’t necessarily do and if you do, it’s a very strange, (excuse my French) fu**ed up dance that you don’t know if it’s someone’s covert way of hitting on me or is this really an opportunity I would be foolish to walk away from. The dynamics get really muddy.”

How To Choose A Credit Card In 7 Easy Steps

How To Choose A Credit Card In 7 Easy Steps

A credit card is a lot like a relationship, it can be full of fun and excitement, but if you aren’t careful it can end in heartbreak. When choosing a credit card, you’ll most likely be in a long-term relationship. Understand your options and ask yourself the right questions. As your matchmaker, I will help you create a beautiful life with your credit card with these 7 easy steps.

1. Decide On The Primary Use Of The Card

The most important step in your decision-making process is to pinpoint why you want to get a credit card. Do you want to be able to travel more often? Do you want to get more out of your daily spending? Do you need debt consolidation or business funding?

If you want to travel, a card with travel rewards would be best for you. If you require debt consolidation or business funding, look at cards with low-interest rates or credit cards specifically for businesses.

Set a goal and do your research to decide what card options would be best for your desired use.

2. Analyze Your Credit

Do you have good or bad credit? Be honest and realistic with yourself when choosing a credit card. The best credit cards require good credit scores. The better your score, the higher the chance you have of being approved for a card with better rewards.

Other factors can also play a role in qualifying you for a credit card. You might be declined for a credit card even though you have a great credit score and pay your balance on time. Contributions that can lead to credit card denial include the length of time you’ve had credit, your debt-to-income ratio, and having too much debt.

Free resources to check your credit score:

    • Free FICO score from credit card issuers
    • Credit Bureaus (Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion)

If your credit score doesn’t warrant preferable credit card options, don’t freak out. There are ways to improve your credit, from modifying your spending habits to making consistent on-time payments. Also, consider getting a secured credit card if your credit needs improving. This card requires a cash security deposit, making them a good option for people with less satisfactory credit scores.

3. Look At Your Spending Habits

Do you plan to pay off the credit card every month or hold a balance? Are you only using it for “rainy day” emergencies or will it be used daily? Consider your spending habits when choosing a credit card, especially if you’re not planning to carry a balance. This means finding a credit card that you can use to your advantage.

    • If you plan to carry a balance, look for a card with the lowest interest rate possible.
    • If you’re going to pay the bill every month, look for a card with no annual fee.
    • If your card will be used daily, look for a card with a generous rewards program and credit limit.
    • If your card will be used for “rainy day” emergencies, look for a card with minimal fees and a low-interest rate.

Many cards give bonus rewards points and cashback for specific purchases. Think about your frequent purchases and the card that will complement your lifestyle. Some cards provide rewards for:

    • Gas
    • Groceries
    • Travel purchases, such as hotels and airline tickets
    • Business purchases
    • Restaurants

4. Research The Credit Cards Available To You

Once you decide on how you will mainly use the card, research the specific types of cards within that card category. Card categories include:

    • A travel credit card
    • A balance transfer credit card
    • A business credit card
    • A cashback credit card
    • A card with 0% APR
    • A secured credit card
    • A premium credit card

5. Narrow Down The Best Rewards

After pinpointing your card category, make a list of the cards that make the most sense. It’s important to get a card with rewards you will use.

What card will give you the best value for your current lifestyle? If your goal is to save money on groceries and shopping, earning points on those purchases might be ideal. If you’re planning multiple trips for upcoming holidays, a card that rewards you in travel mileage and hotel stays might be best.

Credit card options are vast, so to prevent yourself from becoming overwhelmed, create a list of 3-5 cards and narrow it down from there.

6. Compare Offers And Conditions

Key features of a credit card to pay attention to include:

    • APR: The interest you pay on a card when you carry a balance. Many cards advertise 0% APR for the first 12 to 18 months, then interest goes up.
    • Balance: The total amount owed on a credit card, including fees. Interest, and purchase charges. Higher balances lower your credit score.
    • Sign-up Bonus: A special bonus for meeting certain requirements. Gives credit card users a way to earn rewards quickly. You have to meet spending requirements within a specific time frame.
    • Credit Limit: The maximum balance you can hold on a credit card at one time. You may be charged a fee for exceeding your credit limit.
    • Rewards: The points you earn on specific items via credit card spending. These may equal 1-2% of your general spending or specified purchases like gas and groceries.
    • Annual Fee: Sometimes there is an annual cost to having a particular credit card.
    • Other Fees: Some cards have a foreign transaction fee if you use your card while abroad. You may also want to look into late fees, balance transfer fees, or fees for cash advances.
    • Unique Perks: Some cards come with extra perks like concert and movie tickets, roadside assistance, gym memberships, Uber credits and more.

 7. Apply For A Credit Card

After you have compiled all your research, pick the card that is right for you. You can apply online and get the answer within a few minutes, depending on your credit history.

Remember a relationship takes effort and it may not always work out the first time. Every few years, come back to these seven steps and make sure you still have a card that best fits your lifestyle.
