Allen’s suit accusing the cable company of violating the Civil Rights Act of 1866 will move forward
Byron Allen‘s $10 billion racial discrimination lawsuit filed against Charter Communications will proceed after a district court judge ruled in his favor in a motion to dismiss.
Allen’s Entertainment Studios Networks, Inc., which is the parent company of theGrio, announced on Friday that Federal District Court Judge George H. Wu once again denied Charter Communications’ motion to dismiss the suit in which Allen accused the cable company of violating the Civil Rights Act of 1866.

Judge Wu had previously ruled in Allen’s favor back in October 2016, which Charter later appealed. However, the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit upheld Wu’s ruling November 2018.
Charter Communications was denied an attempt to use its First Amendment right, and the precedent of the 1995 U.S. Supreme Court decision in the Hurley case (Hurley v. Irish American Gay, Lesbian, and Bisexual Group of Boston) as a cable provider to escape a claim that it refused a carriage deal with an African American-owned media company due to racial bias.
The Ninth Circuit ruled that racial discrimination can be proven using a lower “contributing factor” standard, and not the highest “but for” standard. After more than five years, Allen may now proceed against Charter with pre-trial initial disclosures and commence discovery.

“Charter once again tried to claim in a court of law that the First Amendment gives them the right to discriminate against Black people. This is a despicable, racist legal position, and I’m highly-confident Charter CEO Tom Rutledge and the Charter Board of
Directors will be held fully accountable,” said Byron Allen, founder, chairman and CEO of Entertainment Studios/Allen Media Group.
“Charter has now been told by Judge Wu twice, and the Ninth Circuit, that the First Amendment does not give anyone the right to discriminate against 100 million minorities in this country.”

In the Hurley case, parade organizers in Boston did not want gay people in their parade, and the parade organizers prevailed by using the First Amendment to discriminate against gay people, and unfortunately, this miscarriage of justice was upheld by the U.S. Supreme Court in 1995.
Charter sent their high-powered lawyer, Patrick Philbin, who defended Donald Trump in his impeachment hearings, into the courtroom to represent them. Charter and their lawyers should have denounced that horrible Hurley decision, but instead relied on this precedent of discrimination against gay people and tried to use this precedent in a civil rights case against Black people. This tells us everything we need to know about Charter under CEO Tom Rutledge.
Charter’s legal defense is the epitome of systemic racism. Charter will continue to lose this case, and I am going to make an example of them for all of America to see, because structural racism will not be tolerated. Systemic racism kills us in the schoolroom, kills us in the boardroom, and kills us in the courtroom, long before it kills us in the streets.

The ‘Black Panther’ star was brought to tears during a radio interview while promoting the blockbuster Marvel film
The world is still in shock and grief over the tragic death of actor Chadwick Boseman, who lost his battle to colon cancer on Friday.
Boseman, 42, had been diagnosed four years ago, which was before he filmed his most iconic role as T’Challa in the Marvel blockbuster, Black Panther.
Looking back, it provides greater context to a touching moment in 2018 when the actor got emotional during an interview in which he opened up about two young fans who passed away from cancer.

While promoting Black Panther, Boseman was asked by Sway Calloway about the film’s impact on the African-American community. The actor went on to share how much the film meant to the two young boys.
“All of it’s been very personal, just watching the kids experiencing it. There are two little kids, Ian and Taylor, who passed from cancer. Throughout our filming, I was communicating with them knowing that they were both terminal. And what they said to me, and their parents said, [is] they’re trying to hold on until this movie comes,” Boseman recalled.
“To a certain degree, you hear them say that, and you’re like ‘wow.’ That’s…like I gotta get up and go to the gym, or I gotta get up and go to work. You know, I gotta learn these lines, I gotta work on this accent. Seeing how devoted all of my cast mates are and knowing that will be something meaningful to them.”

The South Carolina native described the experience of creating a film of such magnitude as “humbling.” He said it also reminded him of what it felt like as a child to look forward to special moments like seeing your favorite superhero who look just like you.
“It’s a humbling experience because you’re like, ‘this can’t mean that much to them,’ you know. But seeing how the world has taken us on, seeing how the movement is, how it’s taken on a life of its own, I realized that they anticipated something great,” Boseman said.
“And I think back now to a kid and just, you know, waiting for Christmas to come, waiting for my birthday to come, waiting for a toy that I was going to get a chance to experiencing, or a video game. I did live life waiting for those moments.”
But when he got back to the topic of Ian and Taylor, the actor was overcome with grief.
“And so it put me back in the mind of being a kid, just to experience those two little boys’ anticipation of this movie, and when I found out that they…,” he said before trailing off in tears.
“Yeah, it means a lot.”

Boseman, star of films such as 21 Bridges, Black Panther and 42, died after a four-year battle with colon cancer. A message shared on his social media platforms confirmed the loss. The actor never spoke publicly about his diagnosis of colon cancer.
“A true fighter, Chadwick persevered through it all, and brought you many of the films you have come to love so much,” said the statement.
“From Marshall to Da 5 Bloods, August Wilson’s Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom and several more – all were filmed during and between countless surgeries and chemotherapy. It was the honor of his career to bring King T’Challa to life in Black Panther.”

The fatal shootings occurred Tuesday evening during the third night of civil unrest following the death of Jacob Blake.
The teen charged with killing two people in Kenosha, Wisconsin earlier this week will remain jailed in Illinois after a judge postponed a hearing on his extradition to Wisconsin.
Kyle Rittenhouse, 17, has been charged with multiple felonies, including homicide.
Rittenhouse, who used a semi-automatic rifle in the attack, is facing first-degree intentional homicide, two counts of first-degree reckless homicide, and attempted first-degree homicide, according to The Associated Press.

As theGrio previously reported, the killings occurred Tuesday evening during the third night of civil unrest following the police shooting of Jacob Blake. Rittenhouse was characterized as being a “white vigilante,” according to social media reports.
During the protest on Tuesday, Rittenhouse spoke to a reporter from the Daily Caller news site.
“People are getting injured and our job is to protect this business,” he said. “And part of my job is to also help people. If there is somebody hurt, I’m running into harm’s way. That’s why I have my rifle.”
The two men he allegedly killed were Joseph Rosenbaum, 36, of Kenosha, and Anthony Huber, 26, of Silver Lake. A third man, Gaige Grosskreutz, 26, was injured and is recovering after surgery, per KTLA.com.
The night of the shootings, Rittenhouse is seen on video running across a parking lot with a rifle, with Rosenbaum following him. Moments later shots ring out, and Rosenbaum falls to the ground.
“I just killed somebody,” Rittenhouse says into his cell phone, according to the criminal complaint.

His attorney Lin Wood said Rittenhouse was simply acting in self-defense.
“Kyle is an innocent boy who justifiably exercised his fundamental right of self-defense. In doing so, he likely saved his own life and possibly the lives of others,” said Wood.
“From my standpoint, it’s important that the message be clear to other Americans who are attacked that there will be legal resources available in the event false charges are brought against them,” he said. “Americans should never be deterred from exercising their right of self-defense.”
In videos and posts on social media, Rittenhouse reportedly praises cops, and is seen assembling and disassembling a rifle and a shotgun.
“Bruh, I’m just tryna be famous,” he says on his TikTok bio page, according to reports.
The Illinois judge postponed Rittenhouse’s extradition hearing to Sept. 25.

The actor quietly battled colon cancer for four years
LOS ANGELES (AP) — Actor Chadwick Boseman, who played Black icons Jackie Robinson and James Brown before finding fame as the regal Black Panther in the Marvel cinematic universe, died Friday of cancer, his representative said.
Boseman died at his home in the Los Angeles area with his wife and family by his side, his publicist Nicki Fioravante told The Associated Press.
Boseman was diagnosed with colon cancer four years ago, his family said in a statement.
“A true fighter, Chadwick persevered through it all, and brought you many of the films you have come to love so much,” his family said. “From Marshall to Da 5 Bloods, August Wilson’s Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom and several more – all were filmed during and between countless surgeries and chemotherapy. It was the honor of his career to bring King T’Challa to life in Black Panther.”
Boseman had not spoken publicly about his diagnosis.
Born in South Carolina, Boseman graduated from Howard University and had small roles in television before his first star turn in 2013. His striking portrayal of the stoic baseball star Robinson opposite Harrison Ford in 2013′s 42 drew attention in Hollywood and made him a star.
Boseman died on a day that Major League Baseball was celebrating Jackie Robinson day.
“This is a crushing blow” actor and director Jordan Peele said on Twitter, one of many expressing shock as the news spread across social media.
“This broke me,” said actor and writer Issa Rae.
His T’Challa character was first introduced to the blockbuster Marvel movies in 2016′s Captain America: Civil War, and his “Wakanda Forever” salute reverberated around the world after the release of Black Panther two years ago.
The character was last seen standing silently dressed in a black suit at Tony Stark’s funeral in last year’s Avengers: Endgame.
Even at the outset of his Hollywood career, Boseman was clear-eyed about — and even skeptical of — the industry in which he would become an international star.
“You don’t have the same exact experience as a Black actor as you do as a white actor. You don’t have the same opportunities. That’s evident and true,” he told AP while promoting 42. “The best way to put it is: How often do you see a movie about a black hero who has a love story — with a black woman, or any woman for that matter … he has a spirituality. He has an intellect. It’s weird to say it, but it doesn’t happen that often.”
In addition to Robinson and Brown, Boseman portrayed U.S. Supreme Court Justice Thurgood Marshall in 2017′s Marshall.
He took on his first producing job in last year’s action thriller 21 Bridges, in which he also starred, and was last seen on-screen in Spike Lee’s film Da 5 Bloods as the leader of a group of Black soldiers in the Vietnam War.

A small gas station in the desert town of Needles, California, is facing criticism after leasing several pro-Trump billboards using funds from a loan received through the federal government’s Paycheck Protection Program.
Jones 1 Inc., the company that owns the Shell gas station and travel center, was approved for a PPP loan between $150,000 and $350,000 in April, according to CNN. Joseph Jones, who owns the business, told the outlet that the loan was used to pay his 32 employees, not for the Trump billboards.
The billboards began popping up in August on Arizona State Route 95 and Interstate 40. The ads are estimated to cost between $10,000 and $30,000 for four weeks, according to Lamar Advertising. If they stay up until the Nov. 3 presidential election, the cost could total $120,000, according to the report.

Jones 1 Inc. allegedly used some of its PPL funds to lease “six beautiful Trump billboards” near the border of California and Arizona. The owner, however, claims the PPP money was used for payroll.
One version of the billboards reads “Trump Pence 2020” with the “Make America Great Again” slogan. Another has a picture of Trump giving a thumbs up and the quote “Promises Made – Promises Kept.”
“If you have enough capital to spend it on billboards, maybe you shouldn’t have been one of the companies to receive this loan,” said Liz Hempowicz, director of public policy at the Project On Government Oversight (POGO), a nonprofit watchdog group. “The responsibility really rested with the SBA and the administration to make sure they were spending these taxpayer dollars in a way that Congress intended.”
Jones has declined to confirm the total cost of the billboards but said it did not come close to $120,000.
“I simply wanted to support my president, that’s all there is to it,” he said.

Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison says the ex-Minneapolis cop deserves the maximum sentence.
Prosecutors in the George Floyd murder case are seeking a harsher sentence for the ex-Minneapolis cop charged with his death.
Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison says Derek Chauvin deserves the maximum sentence because he killed Floyd in front of kids, TMZ reports.
Ellison says in legal docs obtained by the outlet that Floyd was in a “particularly vulnerable” state because he was handcuffed and pinned to the ground by several officers while repeatedly telling Chauvin “I can’t breathe.” He also called out for his dead mother.

Ellison accuses Chauvin of treating Floyd with “particular cruelty.” He ignored onlookers who pleaded with him to acknowledge Floyd’s distress as he pressed his knee on his neck for nearly 9 minutes during an arrest on May 25, theGRIO previously reported.
Chauvin was initially charged with third degree murder, which was later increased to second degree murder by Ellison. He is facing up to 40 years in prison if convicted on his second-degree murder charge.
Floyd’s family lawyered-up with civil rights attorney Benjamin Crump, and filed a federal civil lawsuit in June against the city of Minneapolis and the officers involved in Floyd’s death, including J. Alexander Kueng, Thomas Kiernan Lane and Tou Thao. They have each been charged with second-degree aiding and abetting felony murder and second-degree aiding and abetting manslaughter, per ABC News.

Appearing on CNN, Crump said the family “intends on holding Derek Chauvin fully accountable in every aspect, criminal and civil.”
“It wasn’t just the knee of Derek Chauvin that killed George Floyd in Minneapolis, it was the knee of the entire police department,” Crump stated. “Because when you have that kind of culture and behavior of a police department, it is foreseeable that something like this is going to happen.”
Despite being fired and charged for second degree murder, Chauvin, 44, is reportedly still eligible for his pension. He could potentially receive a total of $1.5 million as part of his package, should he formally file for retirement once he turns 55.
A trial date for the four officers is scheduled for March 8, 2021.

In 2009, Jeanette J. Epps became the first Black woman astronaut for NASA. Next year, she’ll make history again as the first Black woman to live and work on the International Space Station for an extended period of time.
NASA announced this week that Epps has been assigned to the Boeing Starliner-1 mission, her first official spaceflight since joining the agency. Prior to joining NASA, she worked as a technical intelligence officer for the CIA.
“Epps will join NASA astronauts Sunita Williams and Josh Cassada for a six-month expedition planned for a launch in 2021 to the orbiting space laboratory,” the organization wrote in an August 25 statement. “The flight will follow NASA certification after a successful uncrewed Orbital Flight Test-2 and Crew Flight Test with astronauts.
“NASA assigned Williams and Cassada to the Starliner-1 mission in August 2018. The spaceflight will be the first for Cassada and third for Williams, who spent long-duration stays aboard the space station on Expeditions 14/15 and 32/33.”

The father of Jacob Blake, the Black man shot multiple times by a white Wisconsin police officer on Sunday, is outraged over his son being handcuffed to his hospital bed.
29-year-old Blake remains hospitalized with multiple injuries and is paralyzed from the waist down. Doctors do not know if his paralysis will be permanent, theGRIO previously reported.
Blake’s father, Jacob Blake Sr., was left “heartbroken” when he visited his son at the Wauwatosa, Wisconsin hospital, and saw he was handcuffed to the bed. When asked why his son had been arrested, he reportedly received no answer.

“This is an insult to injury,” Justin Blake, the uncle of the victim, told CNN on Thursday. “He is paralyzed and can’t walk and they have him cuffed to the bed. Why?”
Gov. Tony Evers appeared to condemn Blake’s treatment, noting his concern about him being handcuffed, the report states.
“I would have no personal understanding why that would be necessary. I can’t imagine why that’s happening and I would hope that we would be able to find a better way to have him get better and recover,” said Evers.
The Blake family attorney, famed civil rights attorney Benjamin Crump, said it would take a “miracle” for Blake to be able to use his legs again.
“The medical diagnosis right now is that he is paralyzed, because those bullets severed his spinal cord,” Crump said at a press conference on Tuesday.
“He will need a miracle to walk again. He is currently in surgery as we speak, to try and save his life. And return to some semblance of the man he once was,” he added.
Former Democratic presidential candidate Andrew Yang shared Thursday that he spoke with Blake Sr. about his son.
“His father actually used the words ‘chains.’ He said my son is chained up,” Yang told CNN.
“When asked what message I could share on his family’s behalf, #JacobBlake Sr. said to me, ‘Tell them my son is a human being,'” Yang tweeted.

Gabrielle Union revealed that she was keeping a major secret back in 2017 when she first launched her haircare brand, Flawless. While filming the hit BET series Being Mary Jane, the actress was suffering from hair loss following multiple rounds of IVF. With large bald patches around her crown and hairline, Union desperately tried to postpone the launch date of her signature hairline to no avail. As a result, she felt compelled to promote hair products while feeling far from flawless.
After learning a few hard lessons and ending her original deal, the 47-year-old actress relaunched Flawless by Gabrielle Union at the beginning of August with new and improved low-priced products. This time around, Union is sporting a full head of healthy curls and proudly reintroducing Flawless as a majority Black-owned company.
During an exclusive interview with BLACK ENTERPRISE, Union and her business partner, celebrity hairstylist Larry Sims, opened up about her hair journey, revamping Flawless on her own terms, and their commitment to empowering other Black entrepreneurs.
Union jumped at the opportunity to be the face of Flawless three years ago. But with little equity in the company, she had little say in the company’s decisions and direction.
“As much as I raised my hand and said, ‘Hey, this is what I’d like to do,’ at the end of the day, if you are not majority black-owned or a black-owned company, [then] your voice is about as big as your equities,” she told BE.
Back then, Union admits that there “was a disconnect” between her brand and the women she wanted to serve. Flawless products ranged between $19 and $29 and were not sold in communities of color even though the hair care line was marketed for women with textured hair.

“The thing about the 2017 version is [that] it was only black-fronted. It was not Black-led and it was certainly not Black-owned,” said the mother and wife of retired NBA superstar Dwayne Wade. “We had great products, but the price was really, really, really high. As soon as that deal ended, I was committed to wrestling back control of the company, making sure that it was Black-owned, Black-led, Black-marketed, and really centered around the needs and voices of Black women,” she said.
Through lots of research and experimentation, Union eventually regrew her hair with the help of Sims. The two friends then partnered to relaunch the line with some of the natural ingredients that proved to be successful in her hair.
“We tried every single thing that you could think of. Anything that they said that worked on Instagram, we were like, ‘order five!’” Sims told BE. He added that they worked like “mad scientists,” but “it wasn’t until we actually started to play with natural ingredients that we saw results.”
He continued, “The biotin, the rice oil, the rice water, the creatine, the bacuri butters — a lot of the oils that we have in Flawless — they all, as a combination, just worked.”
The new 12-product collection includes a detangling shampoo, restoring conditioner, oil treatment, and curl cream. It also eliminates harmful ingredients like silicones, parabens, and sulfates.
In addition to improved formulas, Union offered Sims a stake in the company, giving them the majority ownership. They used their power to prioritize their customers, marking the down the prices and making the brand as accessible as possible through Amazon.
“It actually makes you a jerk if you figure out a solution, but then you price everybody out of that solution,” said the Bring It On star. “So, we wanted to make sure that our products that are amazing were actually affordable. So we lowered the price points,” she said, explaining that they cut their profit margins in order to do so.
“Everything is between $4 and $10. And then Amazon is literally everywhere. We wanted to make sure especially during COVID, where most people are shopping online, that they were able to get their hands on these products.”

She says Flawless will also be sold Sally’s Beauty stores starting October 1.
“We specifically chose Sally’s Beauty because they are in our communities, they have been in our communities, and they welcome our dollars without demonizing our customers.”
Union and Sims plan to use the Flawless platform to empower others through their “Life As We Climb” initiative, which focuses on highlighting and supporting Black business owners, especially during the pandemic. Some of the brands include Mented Cosmetics, Honey Pot, Vegan Smart, Tru- Colour Bandages, and the Black Women’s Health Imperative.
“What all the statistics and studies are showing is that by the end of this pandemic, we will have lost 50% of Black-owned businesses,” said the outspoken actress and activist. “Black-owned businesses provide minimum 1 million jobs to Black people a year and we wanted to do our part to try to reach as many Black-owned businesses and highlight them, amplify those businesses on our Flawless pages, on our personal pages, and share our space on Amazon with those companies,” she says.
“To Larry and I, it is pointless to rise if you’re rising by herself. I am uninterested in that. So it’s you know, it’s a lift as we climb. So, as we open one door, we are grabbing as many people as we can through the door.”

Kyle Rittenhouse is facing first-degree intentional homicide, two counts of first-degree reckless homicide, and attempted first-degree homicide.
Kyle Rittenhouse, the 17-year-old accused of killing two people during a protest in Kenosha, Wisconsin, has been charged with multiple felonies, including homicide.
Rittenhouse, who used a semi-automatic rifle in the attack, is facing first-degree intentional homicide, two counts of first-degree reckless homicide, and attempted first-degree homicide, according to The Associated Press.
As theGrio previously reported, the killings occurred Tuesday evening during the third night of civil unrest following the police shooting of Jacob Blake. Rittenhouse was characterized as being a “white vigilante,” according to social media reports.

Lt. Joseph Nosalik stated in a news release that the incident occurred in Kenosha in the aftermath of Blake being shot at least seven times by police on Sunday.
One victim was reportedly shot in the head and another was shot in the chest.
The two men killed were Joseph Rosenbaum, 36, of Kenosha, and Anthony Huber, 26, of Silver Lake. A third man, Gaige Grosskreutz, 26, was injured and is recovering after surgery, per KTLA.com.
A protester witnessed the shooting.
“We were all chanting ‘Black lives matter’ at the gas station and then we heard, boom, boom, and I told my friend, that’s not fireworks,” Devin Scott, 19, told the Chicago Tribune. “And then this guy with this huge gun runs by us in the middle of the street and people are yelling, ‘He shot someone! He shot someone!’ And everyone is trying to fight the guy, chasing him and then he started shooting again.”
In addition to the charges mentioned above, Rittenhouse faces a misdemeanor charge of possessing a dangerous weapon under the age of 18. He has also been cited for fleeing “the state of Wisconsin with intent to avoid prosecution for that offense.”
Rittenhouse’s attorney, Lin Wood, said he was acting in self-defense.
He is currently jailed in the Lake County Judicial System in Illinois and awaiting extradition to Wisconsin, according to the Village of Antioch Police Department.

Singer turned mogul Rihanna recently launched her skincare line, Fenty Skin, and shot new videos for Vogue and GQ with past collaborator and close friend, rapper A$AP Rocky.

In one of the clips, Riri explains why even though she’s already pushed the beauty industry to be more inclusive, her fight for more representation is far from over.
And since she’s already tapped A$AP, 31, to model for her debut gender-neutral Fenty Skin campaign, it only made sense to have her join him and share some of his own beauty secrets.
“My skin type is just as complicated as men are,” Rihanna jokingly responded after A$AP asked about her skincare routine during their rapid-fire round of questioning that ran on both sites where they interviewed each other. “Y’all always try to say women are complicated [but] it’s y’all!”
When A$AP was asked what his own skin is like, he playfully answered, “Handsome.”
After admitting that the first thing she notices in people are their skin and their smile, the Fenty founder then touched on the evolution of her own skincare journey, noting she “started from acne for sure, all the way to sensitivity and melasma, and being a Black woman without knowing I need to use SPF. I’ve learned a lot.”
It wasn’t all fun in games though, when the singer divulged what she still takes issue with when it comes to other beauty brands and the industry as a whole.
“I wish the leaders of the beauty industry were a more diverse set of pioneers who have not just experienced the culture but have experienced a negligence in the industry whether it comes to their skin tone or skin type,” she explained. “I feel like there’s so many voids to be filled and we will only know that by the pioneers that have experienced those voids, and the lack of their representation in the industry.”

In the Q&A video that the twosome did for GQ, A$AP echoed Rihanna’s sentiments, explaining, “I wish it was more versatility, diversity, obviously, you know. I think it’s kinda trying to evolve especially with a person like yourself. But I do wish that there was way more versatility.”

As previously reported, the NBA had canceled Wednesday’s playoff games after the Milwaukee Bucks decided not to play in protest of the police shooting of Jacob Blake in Kenosha, Wisconsin. After that display, the league then decided to cancel the other two playoff games scheduled for last night.
The NBA players had earlier today decided that they do want to continue playing the season after contemplating if they should cut the season short with all the racial strife currently taking place.
NBA Executive Vice President Mike Bass issued the following written statement regarding NBA playoff games:
“NBA playoff games for today will not be played as scheduled. We are hopeful to resume games either Friday or Saturday. There is a video-conference call meeting scheduled later this afternoon between a group of NBA players and team governors representing the 13 teams in Orlando, along with representatives from the National Basketball Players Association and the league office and NBA Labor Relations Committee Chairman Michael Jordan, to discuss next steps.”

The WNBA had come to a similar decision when they also opted out of the day’s playoff games for the same reason.
A statement was released by that league today as well.
“As the WNBA players continue discussions and reflection on recent events, the WNBA announced that the three games scheduled for this evening (Chicago Sky vs. Indiana Fever; Dallas Wings vs. New York Liberty; Las Vegas Aces vs. Seattle Storm) have been postponed.
“Information regarding rescheduling of yesterday and today’s games will be provided when available.”
National Basketball Players Association Executive Director Michele Roberts also released a statement regarding Wednesday’s action.
“Throughout the season restart, our players have been unwavering in their demands for systemic justice. This week we witnessed another horrific, shocking and all too familiar act of brutality in the shooting of 29 year-old Jacob Blake in Kenosha, Wisconsin. The Players have, once again, made it clear—they will not be silent on this issue. We stand with the decision of the players of the Milwaukee Bucks to protest this injustice and support the collective decision to postpone all of today’s games.”
The National Hockey League (NHL) has cancelled Thursday night’s Stanley Cup Playoff games after the Hockey Diversity Alliance formally requested the league suspend all playoff games.
The New York Islanders vs. Philadelphia Flyers game in the Toronto bubble, as well as the Vegas Golden Knights vs. Vancouver Canucks matchup in the Edmonton bubble, will not be played, according to ESPN.
The league played all games as scheduled Wednesday, while all or several games were canceled in the NBA, MLB, WNBA and MLS, due to the death of Jacob Blake, who was shot in the back seven times by a Kenosha, Wisconsin, police officer.
That led to some backlash for the league as some of its own players spoke out. San Jose Sharks forward Evander Kane, one of the league’s few Black players and a member of the league’s diversity alliance, said he was hurt by the league’s lack of attention on the issue.
“I’ll be honest, I haven’t really heard much in regards to Jacob Blake’s attempted murder. It’s unfortunate, we’re obviously talking about another Black man unarmed being shot in the back in front of his children,” Kane said on Sportsnet.
“But again, we had these conversations earlier with the George Floyd killing of continuing the conversation, furthering the conversation, everybody wanting to be better and making sure that we’re more vocal and we do better moving forward. Here’s another example, unfortunately, but it’s also another example of the lack of with regards to our league and our players and our media that cover our game.”
Minnesota Wild defenseman Matt Dumba, who is also a member of the alliance, added to Kane’s comments.
“I hope guys find it in them to stand up. You can’t keep coming to the minority players every time there’s a situation like this, Dumba said. “The white players in our league need to have answers for what they’re seeing in society right now, and where they stand.”
ESPN’s Emily Caplan said the league didn’t expect to cancel games Thursday unless players across the league took a strong stance, which they did through a conversation with the Hockey Diversity Alliance.
The alliance’s executive committee includes Dumba, Kane, Detroit Red Wings defenseman Trevor Daley, Buffalo Sabres forward Wayne Simmonds, Philadelphia Flyers forward Chris Stewart, and retired forward Joel Ward.
The group’s goal is “to eradicate racism and intolerance in hockey.”
When the league decided to play games as scheduled Wednesday, Dumba called it disappointing.
“The NHL is always late to the party, especially on these topics, so it’s sorta sad and disheartening for me and other members of the Hockey Diversity Alliance, and I’m sure other guys across the league.”
