Man Charged In Deaths Of 6 More Dallas-Area Elderly Women

DALLAS (AP) — Authorities say a Dallas man previously arrested in the death of an 81-year-old woman killed at least six other elderly women whose jewelry and other valuables he stole.

Kim Leach, a spokeswoman for the Dallas County district attorney’s office, says 46-year-old Billy Chemirmir (CHEH-meer-meer) was indicted Tuesday on six more counts of capital murder.

Chemirmir has been in custody since March 2018 in the death of the 81-year-old. Police said at the time that investigators were reviewing about 750 unattended deaths of elderly women for possible links.

Authorities say he posed as a health care provider or maintenance worker to gain access to the women’s apartments and rob them.

His attorney, Phillip Hayes, says this week’s charges were a surprise and he hasn’t had time to review them.

Black Woman Punches Racist At Sushi Restaurant

A man at a California demanded a table, made misogynistic remarks towards staff, insulted other customers, and then added racist remarks.

A now viral video shows a black woman confronting the man and then repeatedly hitting him before he was pushed out of the restaurant. The brawl went down on Mother’s Day.

According to Eater, it all started on Sunday afternoon when the staff of Aburi Premium AYCE Sushi told a gentleman that he would have to wait for a table at the Long Beach, Calif., restaurant. The man, who was clearly not interested in waiting, became argumentative, demanding a table.

“Where are the people? Where are they?,” he asked. Soon, the man spotted someone looking him in the eye and told the woman to “fucking look over there, bitch.”

“Yo, get the fuck out!” yelled another worker. The man then released a list of “fuck you” screams into the middle distance.

As the man’s female companion tried to usher him out of the restaurant’s door, the man began imitating a primate and making ape noises.

When the man ran into the restaurant and lunged at someone asking him to leave, a Black woman, lept into action and hit him five times. Applause and cheers ensued as the man was kicked out of the restaurant.

A 19-year-old Baton Rouge, Louisiana woman has been arrested and charged with a slew of counts after she pulled a gun out on a man and demanded he perform oral sex on her.

According to WBRZ News, after struggling with the woman to avoid being killed, the victim was forced to leap from a second-floor apartment after Anneisha Speed fired several shots at hi,m

Police say Speed was at the victim’s apartment Monday when she asked him to go down on her. After he refused, Speed whipped out a .40 handgun and threatened to shoot him.

via WBRZ:

When the man grabbed Speed’s wrist, she apparently fired a round into the wall. He then ran out onto the second-floor balcony and jumped to the ground as another shot was fired in his direction, police records say.

Officers found Speed outside the apartment a short while later. She allegedly resisted handcuffs and had to be taken to the ground before she was taken into custody.

After searching the apartment, officers discovered Speed had stolen a shotgun and Playstation 4 game console from the victim’s home.

Speed is currently behind bars at the East Baton Rouge Parish Prison. She has been charged with attempted second-degree murder, illegal discharge of a firearm, theft of a firearm, resisting an officer and tampering with evidence, the report states.

New Balenciaga Scholarship Gives Free Tuition to Black Students

Pratt Institute in New York City is world famous for its programs in architecture, art and design. Now, Demna Gvasalia, creative director of Balenciaga, is helping students of color afford tuition.

Earlier this week, at Pratt’s Celebration of the Creative Spirit scholarship benefit, Gvasalia was honored with the Creative Spirit Award. According to HighSnobiety, Gvasalia was unable to attend but left a wonderful gift in his absence. The mogul and his luxury brand made a commitment to the Black Alumni of Pratt (BAP) to offer full four-year scholarships to two students of African or Latinx descent.

BAP was created in 1990 to provide academic and career opportunities for student and graduate members. Since it was started, the group has raised more than $5 million to advance students of color in the field of art, design and architecture.

With the recent racial incidents in the fashion world, Balenciaga is taking a step in the right direction.

Hunt Tells Browns, ‘You Can Trust Me,’ After Violent Past

(AP Photo)

BEREA, Ohio (AP) — Once he found the courage, Kareem Hunt watched the infamous video of him shoving a woman and then kicking her while she was on the ground.

Like millions of others, he was disturbed.

“I was like, ‘Wow, it’s pretty bad. That’s not me,'” he said, recalling his reaction. “I didn’t really watch the video for a long, long time.”

Hunt swears he’s since changed.

RELATED: NFL Suspends Browns’ Kareem Hunt 8 Games For ‘Altercations’

Given a second chance by his hometown team and the NFL, Hunt spoke Wednesday for the first time since being signed in February by the Browns, who are hoping the 23-year-old has learned from his mistakes and can outrun his violent past.

It’s been an embarrassing and humbling five months for Hunt, released in December by Kansas City just days after a surveillance video showed him physically abusing a woman during an argument in a Cleveland hotel hallway in February 2018. He wasn’t forthcoming to the Chiefs about what transpired and paid the price.

But Browns general manager John Dorsey, who drafted him in 2017 while GM with the Chiefs, decided Hunt deserved a shot at redemption.

Hunt said he’s determined to make the most of it.

“I’m just taking it very seriously,” he said. “Like day by day, I’m just making the best decisions at the time and place. And doing everything I can and prevent something like that from happening again.”

Hunt said he’s promised Dorsey his violent days are over.

“I told him, ‘You can trust me.’ I’ve got to earn his trust, and I’ve got to earn everybody’s trust in the whole organization,” he said. “I’m not willing to mess that up.”

Hunt must serve an eight-game league suspension for “physical altercations” before he can play. For now, he’s allowed to practice with his teammates during the Browns’ offseason training activities, and his time on the field is providing a sanctuary and a place to begin making amends.

While he’s remorseful about his past, Hunt knows only his actions going forward will help him earn back trust.

He’s keeping a close circle of friends and working in the community by speaking to high school students about making smarter decisions.

“It’s very meaningful for them and for me,” he said, “just knowing that I can help them, and talk to these kids about just life. A lot of them have dreams to play football and stuff like that, too, and just giving them positive lift-up. Just always believing in themselves.”

Hunt said part of his motivation for speaking was because he didn’t have the same opportunity.

“I didn’t really have anybody come talk to me when I was in high school,” he said. “Somebody to look up to and explain that, ‘You know, nobody’s perfect and you gotta learn from your mistakes and don’t make the same mistakes.'”

Hunt has been undergoing weekly counseling to help control his behavior. He denied being treated for an alcohol dependency.

“Not so much alcohol, but it was just in there a little bit,” he said. “I pretty much just focused on making myself the better person and talking to them about how to control my anger. I’m not an angry person at all, definitely not. I just felt like I had to make better decisions. I want to talk about ways to make better decisions in certain situations I’m put in.”

Hunt has not reached out to the victim in the video. If he did, he would ask for her forgiveness.

“If I was to see her, I would apologize to her face,” he said. “But I have not had the chance to do that. I don’t know any ways of contacting her.”

As for the Chiefs, who felt betrayed by his dishonesty, Hunt insists he told them what he could before the video showed a different story.

“I know I’m not going to mess this up again,” he said. “And the Chiefs, I didn’t really lie. I just told them what I knew at the time, and when the video came out, it was me seeing it too for the first time again, it was so long ago. They felt like I lied to them. That’s all right.”

Hunt said a renewed Christian faith has helped him get through this period of his life. He plans to be baptized Sunday.

“I’m looking forward, so I can feel reborn,” he said.

NYC Activists Plan Alternative Gay Pride March For Same Day

NEW YORK (AP) — Activists who believe that New York City’s massive gay pride parade has become too corporate are planning an alternative “Queer Liberation March” on the same day.

Both events on June 30 will commemorate the 50th anniversary of the 1969 Stonewall riots that helped spark the modern gay rights movement. The alternative march is slated to start at 9:30 a.m., while the main pride march will start at noon.

Organizers of the alternative event said Tuesday that they are negotiating with the city Parks Department for a rally on the Great Lawn of Central Park after their march. A Parks Department spokeswoman confirmed that the negotiations are taking place.

The group, called the Reclaim Pride Coalition, “wants to make sure that Stonewall 50 lives up to the spirit of what happened here 50 years ago,” civil liberties lawyer Norman Siegel said at a news conference announcing the group’s plans.

The official gay pride parade has grown from its scrappy origins into a daylong affair with more than 100 floats and contingents from major corporations.

Cathy Renna, a spokeswoman for NYC Pride, sponsors of the main march and other events commemorating the 50th anniversary of Stonewall, said she hopes the alternative march is a success, adding, “We have over 50 events that we are working to make as safe and accessible and inclusive as we possibly can for the community, whether they be cultural events or political events or film festivals or family events or the march itself.”

Police: Pregnant Woman’s Baby Cut From Womb After Her Murder [Video]

CHICAGO (AP) — A pregnant woman whose body was found behind a home on Chicago’s Southwest Side was murdered and her baby was “forcibly removed” from her body after her death, police said.

The Cook County medical examiner’s office identified the victim on Wednesday as that of 19-year-old Marlen Ochoa-Uriostegui.

Ochoa-Uriostegui’s body was discovered after several people were taken into custody at the home, according to authorities. No charges against those in custody have been announced.

Her family said they believe she went to the home after a woman on Facebook said she had a stroller and baby clothes, according to the Chicago Tribune.

“She was giving clothes away, supposedly under the pretense that her daughters had been given clothes and they had all these extra boy clothes,” said Cecelia Garcia, a spokeswoman for Ochoa-Uriostegui’s family.

Chicago Fire Department spokesman Larry Merritt told the Chicago Tribune paramedics were called to the home for a newborn with problems breathing on the same day the woman disappeared.

“We believe that she was murdered and we believe that the baby was forcibly removed following that murder,” said Chicago police spokesman Anthony Guglielmi. He adds the baby was hospitalized and is in “grave” condition after being cut from the mother’s body.

The medical examiner’s office announced Ochoa-Uriostegui died of ligature strangulation, and her death is considered a homicide. Ochoa-Uriostegui was nine months pregnant when she disappeared April 23 after leaving her high school.

Guglielmi said investigators are interviewing the people taken from the home about the slaying of Ochoa-Uriostegui.

“We believe all of them played some role in this unspeakable act of violence,” he said.

Kansas College Agrees To Outside Probe After Player’s Death

(Courtesy Joanne Atkins-Ingram via AP)

WICHITA, Kan. (AP) — A Kansas community college agreed under mounting pressure to an independent investigation into the heatstroke death last year of a football player who collapsed after the first day of conditioning practice.

Trustees for Garden City Community College voted Tuesday evening to authorize the outside probe into the death of 19-year-old Braeden Bradforth of Neptune, New Jersey. He was found unconscious outside his dorm room on Aug. 1 after practice and died that night at a hospital.

“I am hoping that this will finally let me know my son’s last moments,” his mother, Joanne Atkins-Ingram, said Wednesday in phone interview from New Jersey. “And I am hoping that through this investigation they will find out exactly what went wrong and how to correct it appropriately — and to make sure that whatever changes need to be made, will be made.”

The trustees’ move comes just two weeks after New Jersey’s 12-member U.S. House delegation called for an independent investigation into Bradforth’s death. His mother and her attorney also were pushing for the probe, and had expressed concerns about the accuracy and thoroughness of an internal review.

“I was elated the school is finally doing the right thing and hopefully it will provide Joanne the answers she has been waiting for,” said Jill Greene, the mother’s attorney in New Jersey.

A summary that the college released this month on its internal investigation said ample water was available to the players. But Greene said players have told her and media outlets that they weren’t allowed to drink water during the conditioning drills.

“Nobody drank the water because, as I understand it, if they drank the water then they were done — that they were no longer able to participate in the conditioning practice, which was very extreme and very strenuous,” Greene said. “They would be forced to participate in the exact same practice the following morning at 6 a.m.”

The college has declined to respond to the players allegations, citing possible litigation.

Jeff Simms, who was the head coach at Garden City Community College when Bradforth died, has since been hired as head coach at Missouri Southern State University.

Garden City Community College said in an email Wednesday that the board authorized its president, Ryan Ruda, and college attorney Randy Grisell to begin the process of retaining outside counsel to conduct an investigation. The board put a limit of $100,000 on the cost.

In a subsequent statement Wednesday evening, the college said the internal review served its intended purpose to gather information about the death, and was the most appropriate course of action at the beginning of the process. It said the decision to authorize the external review is the “most logical sequential step in the process.”

“An external investigation may be able to provide the answers that are still sought by Braeden’s family and others, and it may also serve to confirm the findings of the GCCC internal review,” the college said.

Greene said New Jersey Republican Rep. Chris Smith was “instrumental” in making the investigation happen. She said about a dozen Kansas politicians whom she contacted never returned her messages.

“After many months of tirelessly fighting for answers on what happened to her son, Joanne Atkins-Ingram has finally been promised an objective, professional probe — and the information any grieving mother deserves,” Smith said in an emailed statement.

“If it is properly done, this investigation could save lives in the future by helping prevent heat stroke deaths through education on best practices,” he added.

The college said in its summary that it has taken several steps as a result of its internal review, including hiring an additional trainer and a conditioning coach, training all coaches in CPR and first aid, and developing a protocol to recognize and treat heat-related illnesses.

NYC Mayor De Blasio Is Seeking Democratic Nod For President

(AP Photo)

NEW YORK CITY (AP) — New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio (dih BLAH’-zee-oh) says he is running for president.

The Democrat announced his bid with a video released by his campaign early Thursday morning.

In announcing his candidacy, de Blasio is seeking to claim a role on the national stage that has eluded him as mayor of the biggest U.S. city.

The 58-year-old could face obstacles in distinguishing himself in a field crowded with left-leaning Democrats.

He also faces skepticism at home. A recent poll found 76% of New Yorkers say they believe he shouldn’t run.

De Blasio has shrugged off bad polls, saying he believes his message of fighting financial inequality will resonate with everyday Americans.

On the campaign trail, he’ll be able to cite accomplishments such as expanding full-day prekindergarten citywide.

Video Of Man Shoved Off Bus Released In Vegas Murder Case [Video]

LAS VEGAS (AP) — Police in Las Vegas have released security video they say shows a woman shoving a 74-year-old man off a public bus after witnesses say he asked her to be nice to other passengers.

The video shows Serge Fournier landing face-first on a sidewalk east of downtown on March 21. He died April 23.

The Clark County coroner ruled Fournier’s death a homicide resulting from his injuries.

Authorities arrested 25-year-old Cadesha Michelle Bishop on May 6. She has been charged with murder and was freed on $100,000 bail with electronic monitoring pending a preliminary hearing of evidence May 23.

Public defense attorney Charles Cano, who represents Bishop, didn’t immediately respond Wednesday to messages.

A department statement says investigators still seek witnesses to the March 21 incident.

Search For Missing 4-Year-Old Maleah Davis Continues Near Texas Haunted House

Days after Maleah Davis stepfather was arrested and weeks after she went missing, Texas authorities confirmed that they are searching for the 4-year-old near a haunted house in Texas.

According to FOX 26, Texas Equusearch coordinator confirmed that they are looking for the child near the Creepy Hollow Haunted House in Rosharon where Derion Vence was arrested in connection to the case. Apparently, Vence is familiar with that area because he worked as a mail carrier in the town from 2017-2018.

“All we look for is something that doesn’t fit in,” Jack Boggess with Texas Equusearch told FOX 26.

RELATED: Derion Vance Arrested After Dogs Find Evidence Of Crime

“We look for clothing, shoes, whatever. Just something that doesn’t fit in, and that’s what we key on.”

KHOU reported that Vence’s mother-in-law claims that Vence once told her that if he killed anyone he would hide them in Rosharon because no one would ever find the body.

On Saturday night, Vence was arrested and charged with tampering with evidence—a human corpse— after investigators discovered the young girl’s blood in his home and reviewed surveillance footage that shows the 26-year-old walking out of his apartment carrying a heavy laundry basket.

It’s been nearly two weeks since Vence claimed that a group of Latino men kidnapped Davis when they were on their way to pick up Davis’ mother, Brittany Bowens, from the airport. He told authorities that he stopped to fix a flat tire when the men came and knocked him out. According to Vence, the men took Davis, but left Vence’s 1-year-old son him.

A taxi driver later found Vence’s car in Missouri City on May 9.

Last week, Bowens and her lawyer made some serious accusations against Vence, claiming that he was upset with her because she broke off their engagement. That, and he may have been molesting her daughter.

“On the day that Brittany left to be with her sick father — her dying father — to be with family, there was a huge fight between her and him,” Quanell X, her lawyer said in a press conference on May 10.

“He was hurt, he was angry, he was upset,” adding, “She told him she was giving back his ring and that she was not going to marry him. I believe that caused him to snap in anger. There is a reason to believe, based on what I know now, there’s issues of him possibly molesting young Maleah.”

Despite having suspicions of possible sexual abuse, Bowens never reported it to the police.

But KTRK reported that in January 2019 Davis and two other siblings were removed from her home as CPS investigated allegations of physical abuse related to a severe head injury she endured. Yet the children were returned the following month when it was determined that Davis’ injuries were the result of a fall. All of Bowens’ children, including the child she has with Vence have been removed from her home as the investigation continues.

Meanwhile, law enforcement officials have not yet confirmed whether Davis has died, but investigators do not think she is still alive.

Davis was last seen wearing a pink bow in her hair, a light blue zip jacket, blue jeans and gray, white and pink sneakers.

If you have any information into Davis’ disappearance please contact Houston Police at at 713-308-3600 or Crime Stoppers at 713-222-TIPS.

Lawsuit Filed To Stop Ohio Abortion Ban After 1st Heartbeat

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — Planned Parenthood and abortion clinics sued Wednesday to thwart Ohio’s latest and most restrictive abortion law, an anticipated move that’s part of a national anti-abortion strategy to challenge the landmark Roe v. Wade decision.

The lawsuit is similar to legal fights in several southern states that recently passed similar, or more aggressive, legislation to push the now-conservative-leaning Supreme Court to take up abortion and overturn the 1973 ruling that legalized abortion.

Wednesday’s lawsuit filed in federal court in Columbus by groups represented by the American Civil Liberties Union and other civil rights attorneys says banning abortions after the first detectable fetal heartbeat is unconstitutional and would prohibit nearly all abortions in Ohio, or as many as nine of every ten.

RELATED:Alabama Senate Passes Ban On Abortion, With Few Exceptions

A detectable heartbeat can come as early as five or six weeks into pregnancy, before many women know they’re pregnant. The Ohio law makes no exceptions for pregnancies resulting from rape or incest, and was signed into law by Republican Gov. Mike DeWine last month.

SIGN UP FOR OUR NEWSLETTER:

The lawsuit asks for a temporary and then permanent ban on the law taking effect, and to have it declared unconstitutional.

Legal abortion is one of the safest medical procedures in the United States and is substantially safer than continuing a pregnancy to childbirth, the lawsuit said.

“If a woman is forced to continue a pregnancy against her will, it can pose a risk to her physical, mental, and emotional health, as well as to the stability and well-being of her family, including existing children,” according to the lawsuit.

A message was left with the office of Ohio Attorney General David Yost, who is expected to fight the lawsuit.

At least five states have passed anti-abortion legislation that is aimed at provoking a legal challenge with the potential to overturn the Roe v. Wade ruling that legalized abortion up until viability, usually at 22 to 24 weeks.

“We believe that the heartbeat bill is the right vehicle for the Supreme Court to overturn Roe v. Wade. Our strategy has always included a federal court challenge and today starts that judicial process,” Mike Gonidakis, president of Ohio Right to Life, said Wednesday.

Kentucky, Mississippi, and Georgia have also approved bans on abortion once a fetal heartbeat is detected. A judge in Kentucky blocked enforcement of that state’s heartbeat ban after the ACLU filed suit on behalf of the clinic in Louisville.

An Alabama bill sent to Gov. Kay Ivey on Tuesday goes even further by seeking to outlaw abortion outright , and includes no exceptions for rape or incest.

Texas Officer Shoots And Kills Woman After Stun-Gun Struggle

BAYTOWN, Texas (AP) — A police officer shot and killed a woman at a Houston-area apartment complex after she hit him with his Taser during a struggle, shocking him, police said.

In a video recorded by a witness and posted on social media, the officer can be seen standing over Pamela Turner and reaching down to try to grab her arms. Turner, who is lying on the ground outside the apartments in Baytown, yells “I’m pregnant.” Moments later, something flashes as she reaches her arm out toward the officer. Suddenly, the officer pulls away from Turner, steps back and fires five gunshots.

Police Lt. Steve Dorris said Tuesday that the officer shot at Turner after she hit him in the groin with the Taser. Turner did not fire the stun gun but it shocked the officer when it struck him, Dorris said.

RELATED: Officer Shoots And Kills Woman Claiming To Be Pregnant

The lieutenant said police have since learned from the medical examiner’s office in Harris County that Turner, who was 44 and black, was not pregnant. She was pronounced dead at the scene, he said. A spokeswoman with the medical examiner’s office declined to comment.

The officer, who police have not identified by name, has been placed on paid administrative leave, Dorris said. The department is reviewing whether the shooting was in line with its policy on the use of deadly force, he said.

Before the shooting, the officer, who is Hispanic and an 11-year veteran of the police force, was patrolling the apartment complex and tried to arrest Turner because he knew she had outstanding warrants, Dorris said. The two had previous dealings, but Dorris did not provide further details about the interactions or Turner’s warrants.

SIGN UP FOR OUR NEWSLETTER:

Turner had three outstanding misdemeanor warrants for two separate incidents, according to Harris County court records. She was accused of criminal mischief and assault on April 25 after a manager at her apartment complex told police that Turner scratched her face and broke her glasses during a confrontation over an eviction notice.

On May 2, court records show, Turner was again accused of criminal mischief for damaging the back window of a woman’s car.

Following her May 2 arrest, Turner was ordered to undergo a mental health evaluation, according to court records.

The video of what happened Monday night shows the officer and Turner engaged in a struggle after he tried to arrest her. In the video, Turner is heard saying “You’re actually harassing me” and “I’m actually walking to my house” before falling to the ground. While on her back, she appears to scuffle with the officer, saying “Why? Why?” and then “I’m pregnant.”

Investigators are trying to contact whoever recorded the video, because the person was a witness to the shooting, the lieutenant said.

“It’s a tragic event for everybody involved,” Dorris said. “Of course, our hearts go out to the family of the deceased as well as our officer.”

LIKE US ON FACEBOOK. FOLLOW US ON TWITTER AND INSTAGRAM

On Tuesday afternoon, Turner’s neighbors gathered not far from an orange ring painted on the apartment complex parking lot to mark where she was shot. Standing amid the modest brick and aluminum homes, one of Turner’s neighbors said the incident frightened her.

“It’s just sad — very sad — when you see somebody for the past six months walking around,” Jennifer Sims said. “Even though you don’t talk to them, you keep an eye on them, you know. And then you wake up and realize, ‘Oh, my God. She was shot so close to home.’ That’s scary, and very sad.”

Baytown, a city of more than 75,000 people, is about 25 miles (40 kilometers) east of Houston. Its population is 35 percent white, 46 percent Hispanic and 16 percent black, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.

Outside the city’s police station Tuesday, about a dozen protesters gathered carrying signs with “No Justice. No Peace” and “Black Lives Matter” written on them.

“This is another black woman who has lost her life,” said Ashton P. Woods, an activist with Black Lives Matter Houston. “Another black person who has lost their life, for senseless violence. Five shots. Unarmed.”

Kevin Davis, a police detective and the author of a book on investigating police use of force, said it is impossible to make a proper assessment of Turner’s shooting based only on the video and facts released so far.

Davis, who is not connected to the case, said the smartphone videos that have become common in police shootings can lead people to rush to judgment. “We owe it to everyone involved, including the decedent, to do a professional investigation,” he said.

Herman Cain Believes ‘Fake News’ Has ‘Brainwashed’ Black Folks To Hate Trump [Video]

Former presidential candidate Herman Cain believes Black folks have been “brainwashed” by the media to hate the president.

Cain, Donald Trump’s former nominee to serve on the Federal Reserve Board, was asked by TMZ why more Black Americans hold less than favorable views of Trump despite his progress on criminal justice reform, for instance.

“They’re getting brainwashed according to the news that they watch,” Cain said. “It’s been statistically shown that certain stations, certain news outlets, they simply are not telling the entire truth. And in some cases, people are being brainwashed.”

Twitter user Aisha Na’Sha replied under the comments of the TMZ story with: “Definitely not true. My earliest memory of Donald Trump was him doing something disrespectful. So from jump my opinion on him has always been a little off. I don’t hate anyone.”

Cain says Trump should be acknowledged for the work he’s doing behind the scenes for the culture, like pushing forward criminal justice reform and lowering unemployment rates. He believes these accomplishments are overlooked due to “fake news.”

Do you agree?

Meanwhile, as noted by The Hill, Trump announced Cain’s withdrawal from consideration to serve on the Federal Reserve’s board of governors in a tweet days after the pizza tycoon said on the Fox Business Network that he wouldn’t “run away from criticism” and that withdrawing was “not in [his] nature.”

“My friend Herman Cain, a truly wonderful man, has asked me not to nominate him for a seat on the Federal Reserve Board. I will respect his wishes. Herman is a great American who truly loves our Country!” Trump tweeted last month.

Police: 5-Year-Old Brings Crack Cocaine To Preschool

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Philadelphia police are investigating after a 5-year-old boy brought about two dozen vials of crack cocaine into a preschool at a Roman Catholic church.

Police say the boy told a teacher’s aide at St. Cyprian Children’s Center that the person who handed him the bag told him to hide it.

The Archdiocese of Philadelphia tells WTXF-TV that the teacher’s aide took the bag, which she suspected held drugs, informed an administrator, and they called 911.

No other children came in contact with the drugs, and no one was harmed.

No arrests have been made.

Alabama Senate Passes Ban On Abortion, With Few Exceptions

(The Montgomery Advertiser via AP)

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) — Alabama’s Senate passed a near-total ban on abortion Tuesday, sending what would be the nation’s most stringent abortion law to the state’s Republican governor.

The GOP-dominated Senate voted 25-6 to make performing an abortion at any stage of pregnancy a felony punishable by up to 99 years or life in prison for the abortion provider. The only exception would be when the woman’s health is at serious risk.

Senators rejected an attempt to add an exception for rape and incest. The amendment was voted down 21-11, with four Republicans joining Democrats.

“You don’t care anything about babies having babies in this state, being raped and incest,” Democratic Sen. Bobby Singleton said on the Senate floor after the amendment’s defeat. “You just aborted the state of Alabama with your rhetoric with this bill.”

Bill sponsor Rep. Terri Collins said she expects Gov. Kay Ivey to sign the ban into law. Ivey has not publicly commented on what she’ll do.

The lopsided vote suggests a veto could be easily overcome. Ivey spokeswoman Lori Jhons said in a statement after the vote that “the governor intends to withhold comment until she has had a chance to thoroughly review the final version of the bill that passed.”

Supporters said the bill is designed to conflict with the U.S. Supreme Court’s landmark 1973 Roe v. Wade decision legalizing abortion nationally, because they hope to spark a court case that might prompt the justices to revisit abortion rights.

“It’s to address the issue that Roe. v. Wade was decided on. Is that baby in the womb a person?” Collins said.

Supporters had argued that exceptions would weaken their hope of creating a vehicle to challenge Roe. Collins said that the law isn’t meant to be a long-term measure and that lawmakers could add a rape exception if states regain control of abortion access.

“Roe v. Wade has ended the lives of millions of children,” Republican Sen. Clyde Chambliss said in a statement after the bill’s passage. “While we cannot undo the damage that decades of legal precedence under Roe have caused, this bill has the opportunity to save the lives of millions of unborn children.”

Emboldened by conservative justices who have joined the Supreme Court, abortion opponents in several states are seeking to challenge abortion access. Kentucky, Mississippi, Ohio and Georgia have approved bans on abortion once a fetal heartbeat is detected, which can occur in about the sixth week of pregnancy.

The Alabama bill goes further by seeking to outlaw abortion outright. Unlike measures in other states, Alabama would punish only the abortion provider, not the woman receiving the abortion.

Democrats, who hold eight seats in Alabama’s 35-member Senate, criticized the ban as a mixture of political grandstanding, an attempt to control women and a waste of taxpayer dollars.

During debate, Singleton pointed out and named rape victims watching from the Senate viewing gallery. He said that under the ban, doctors who perform abortions could serve more prison time than the women’s rapists.

In a statement, Staci Fox of Planned Parenthood Southeast said, “Today is a dark day for women in Alabama and across this country. … Alabama politicians will forever live in infamy for this vote and we will make sure that every woman knows who to hold accountable.”

Outside the Statehouse, about 50 people rallied and chanted, “Whose choice? Our choice.” Several women dressed as characters from the “The Handmaid’s Tale,” which depicts a dystopian future where fertile women are forced to breed.

If the bill becomes law, it would take effect in six months. Critics have promised a swift lawsuit. Randall Marshall, executive director of the American Civil Liberties Union of Alabama, said a complaint is being drafted.

Man’s Wife Died But He Took Her On Road Trip Anyway

(Pinal County Adult Detention Center via AP)

PHOENIX (AP) — A husband arrested in Arizona on suspicion of concealing his wife’s dead body was seen earlier on security video moving a woman’s naked body to his vehicle outside a Texas hotel, police said Tuesday.

Previous footage showed the couple from Sand Springs, Oklahoma, walking into their room at the El Paso hotel on Sunday evening.

The next morning, 70-year-old Rodney Puckett is seen using a luggage cart to move the body of 74-year-old Linda Puckett, said Sgt. Kristie Barnette, a police spokeswoman in Eloy, where Rodney Puckett was later arrested.

Puckett told investigators he found his wife unresponsive on Monday and put her body in their vehicle before continuing an unplanned trip to California.

The cause of death hasn’t been determined, but Barnette noted that Linda Puckett had signs of blunt-force trauma on her body. It’s unclear why Rodney Puckett moved the body, she said.

It’s not known whether he has an attorney who could comment.

Authorities in Arizona were alerted about Puckett after a drive-thru worker at a restaurant in Eloy, 64 miles (103 kilometers) southeast of downtown Phoenix, reported seeing a naked woman inside Puckett’s vehicle.

A detective responded and found Linda Puckett’s body in the front seat, with her head on the floorboard and her feet near the headrest. Rodney Puckett was wearing only underwear.

El Paso police spokesman Sgt. Enrique Carrillo said authorities there didn’t receive any earlier reports of suspicious activity involving the couple. He declined to comment further.

The couple was undergoing a divorce to end their nearly eight-year marriage and had filed restraining orders against each other earlier this year in Oklahoma, court records state. A lawyer representing Linda Puckett in the divorce said in the documents that she and her husband were incompatible.

Jonathan Sutton, an attorney in Tulsa who represented Rodney Puckett in the divorce, declined to comment about the arrest in Arizona. Joseph Harris, who represented Linda Puckett in the divorce, didn’t immediately return a call seeking comment.

NYPD Training Official: Garner Officer Used Banned Chokehold

(AP Photo)

NEW YORK (AP) — The New York Police Department official in charge of training recruits said Tuesday that the restraint technique an officer used on Eric Garner five years ago, leading to his death, “meets the definition” of a chokehold, a practice banned since the 1990s because of its potential for lethality.

Cell phone video of the July 2014 confrontation shows Garner coughing after Officer Daniel Pantaleo wrapped an arm around his neck — an indication that pressure on Garner’s windpipe obstructed his breathing, Inspector Richard Dee said in testimony at a disciplinary trial that could lead to Pantaleo’s firing.

“I’m not saying he intentionally did that, but that’s where his arms are,” Dee testfied.

Dee is the latest high-ranking official to say what Garner’s family has long believed: that Pantaleo’s conduct in grabbing Garner and wrestling him to a Staten Island sidewalk violated department rules and ran counter to his training and the repeated warnings officers receive to avoid tactics that could hinder breathing.

“When I heard that, I was just wondering: Why is Pantaleo still on the payroll? Because that sounds like it should be immediate – I mean, immediate – dismissal,” Garner’s mother, Gwen Carr, said after Dee testified on the second day of a trial that could last two weeks.

In the days after Garner’s death, Mayor Bill de Blasio and the police commissioner at the time, Bill Bratton, both said it appeared to them that Pantaleo had used a chokehold, and the medical examiner ruled that a chokehold caused Garner’s death. The autopsy is expected to be the focus of Wednesday’s testimony.

An internal affairs investigation completed five months after Garner’s death also reached the conclusion that a chokehold was used and that Pantaleo should face disciplinary charges. But the police department put its case on hold, saying it was deferring to federal prosecutors who were looking into potential civil rights charges.

Last year, however, police officials said they were out of patience and cleared the way for a police watchdog agency to pursue a disciplinary case against Pantaleo.

The NYPD’s disciplinary process plays out like a trial in front of an administrative judge. Normally the purpose is to determine whether an officer violated department rules, but that’s only if disciplinary charges are filed within 18 months of an incident.

Because Pantaleo’s case languished, the watchdog Civilian Complaint Review Board must show that his actions rose to the level of criminal conduct, even though he faces no criminal charges and is being tried in a department tribunal, not a criminal court.

The final decision on any punishment lies with the police commissioner. Penalties range from the loss of vacation days to firing.

Pantaleo, 33, denies wrongdoing. He has been on desk duty since Garner’s death.

The NYPD banned chokeholds in 1993 after a spike in deaths of people being apprehended or in police custody.

The department’s patrol guide, a mammoth volume of practices and procedures, states that officers, “will NOT use chokeholds.” It defines the ban to include “any pressure to the throat or windpipe, which may prevent or hinder breathing or reduce intake of air.”

A section on chokeholds in the police academy manual issued to Pantaleo in 2006 puts it more bluntly: “they’re deadly.”

At first, Dee said, it appeared Pantaleo was going for an arm bar, arm lock or what’s known as a “seat-belt hold” as he grappled with the 350-pound Garner. All of those are approved restraint techniques.

Then, Dee said, Pantaleo is “kind of just wrapped around his neck and shoulder and is trying to just throw him down.”

“He’s kind of taking a little ride on his back,” he said.

Pantaleo’s lawyer and union contend he was using the “seat-belt hold.” They say his training instructor will testify that he taught Pantaleo the technique at the police academy.

Dee questioned that, saying the academy didn’t teach the technique until 2011 – five years after Pantaleo joined the force. Dee said there’s no indication in police department records that Pantaleo learned the move during later training sessions.

“With something as serious as a takedown, it would not be appropriate to teach something that wasn’t approved and wasn’t in the lesson plan,” Dee said.

Russians Accessed 2 Florida Voting Databases

(AP Photo)

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) — Russian hackers gained access to voter databases in two Florida counties ahead of the 2016 presidential election, Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis said at a news conference Tuesday.

DeSantis said the hackers didn’t manipulate any data and the election results weren’t compromised. He and officials from the Florida Department of Law Enforcement were briefed by the FBI and Department of Homeland Security on Friday.

The governor said he signed an agreement with the FBI not to disclose the names of the counties, but elections officials in those counties are aware of the intrusions.

One person who wasn’t aware was DeSantis’ predecessor, now-Republican U.S. Sen. Rick Scott, DeSantis said.

“We’re trying to figure out what the state knew at the time,” DeSantis said. “Obviously, the previous administration and the head of FDLE did not have that information.”

He said the hackers gained access through a spearfishing email after a worker clicked a link.

Scott criticized his opponent in last year’s election, then-Democratic U.S. Sen. Bill Nelson, for saying Russians had hacked elections systems. Scott called the allegations sensational.

Scott will receive a briefing from the FBI on Wednesday, said spokesman Chris Hartline. Hartline confirmed that Scott wasn’t aware of the hacking while he was serving as governor.

“It’s pretty clear during our back and forth in the campaign there was no information provided to the state,” Hartline said. “There will be a lot of questions … We’ll know more tomorrow.”

Special counsel Robert Mueller’s report on Russian interference in the 2016 election also said hackers gained access to the network of at least one Florida county. Republican U.S. Sen. Marco Rubio has previously said at least one Florida county had an intrusion.

DeSantis said he was frustrated when he saw the vague reference to hacking in Mueller’s report.

“Hey, this shows up in the Mueller report, no one ever said anything to me,” DeSantis said. “Granted, I took office in 2019 and this happened in 2016, so I get why the FBI wouldn’t have rushed to tell me about something several years ago.”

He did say the FBI and Homeland Security officials said Florida is ahead of the curve in elections cybersecurity ahead of the 2020 election — though he warned that attacks change constantly.

“Threats evolve, so I don’t ever want to say, ‘Hey, there’s no more threats.’ It’s just something you’ve always got to be vigilant about.”

She told Channel 2 she was asleep with her 2-year-old granddaughter in her arms when she was shot.

No one else in the home was injured.
