Here’s How Women of Color Can Become Business Angel Investors – Apply Now

Pipeline Angels, an angel investment syndicate that aims to change the face of angel investors and create capital for women and non-binary femme social entrepreneurs, is opening it’s doors to its 2019 summer angel investing bootcamp.

Since their launch in April 2011, over 300 members have graduated from the organization’s angel investing bootcamp and have invested more than $5 million in over 50 companies. Pipeline Angels members serve as the friends and family round for entrepreneurs who may not already have support at that critical stage.

“As a Black woman in tech, I was searching for a way to disrupt the perception of what tech superstars look like.” said Lisha Bell, member of Pipeline Angels and product manager at Braintree. “When I discovered Pipeline Angels, I thought, ‘This organization gets it,'”

Pipeline Angels opened the door and provided me access to a world I had no access to despite my success and credentials. Being championed in a pivotal role in an industry that can be so unwelcoming to people who look like me or come from where I came from was so refreshing. This space needs more of us and I’m proud to support the mission.”

So what is the criteria to apply?

  • Woman or femme (we encourage anyone who identifies with womanhood–cis, trans, non-binary–to apply)
  • Meeting one of the accredited investor definitions (i.e., US$200K in income or US$300K joint income with a spouse for the past two years, or US$1M net worth)
  • Interest in a group learning model
  • Passion for social entrepreneurship

They are currently looking for applicants for in Atlanta, Boston, Charlotte, Chicago, Cleveland, Dallas, D.C., Los Angeles, Miami, Minneapolis, New Orleans, New York City, Oakland, San Diego, San Juan (Puerto Rico), and Seattle.

John Singleton’s Daughter: “My Father Is Not in a Coma”

The family of filmmaker John Singleton is reportedly fighting for control of his business affairs and estate following the 51-year-old movie director’s stroke last week. Singleton’s mother is seeking to be appointed as his temporary conservator and claims that he has fallen into a coma. Singleton’s daughter, however, is disputing that claim as well as her grandmother’s pursuit of conservatorship, which would grant her legal authority to make medical and financial decisions on Singleton’s behalf while he is incapacitated.

Singleton made history at 24 years old when he became both the first African American and youngest person ever to be nominated for Best Director at the 1992 Academy Awards for his debut film Boyz n the Hood (1991). The groundbreaking film also received an Oscars nod for Best Original Screenplay. The screenwriter went on to direct a number of notable films and television series throughout his career, including classics like Poetic Justice and Baby Boy, 2 Fast 2 Furious, and the recent FX crime drama Snowfall.

Earlier this month, it was reported that the South Los Angeles native suffered from a severe stroke on April 17 and was placed in intensive care. At the time, his family released a statement saying that he was under “great medical care.” His mother, Shelia Ward, filed papers in court on Thursday stating Singleton is “currently hospitalized in a coma and is unable to provide for his personal needs” or “manage his financial resources,” according to The Associated Press. The court papers also claim that at the time of his stroke, Singleton was “engaged in several business deals” and in the process of signing “a lucrative settlement agreement.” The papers added that he would take a huge financial loss if a conservator cannot sign the papers on his behalf.

Singleton’s daughter, Cleopatra Singleton, however, is publicly denying her grandmother’s claims, according to a report published in The New York Times Friday. “My father is not in a coma,” she told The NYT. “My father had a stroke on April 17, 2019, and at this point, we are optimistic about a full recovery.” She added that her siblings also oppose the idea of giving their grandmother control over their father’s estate, which is valued at $1.4 million. “Myself, several of my siblings, and my father’s father will oppose my grandmother’s application to be appointed my father’s legal conservator,” she said. She added that there will be a hearing “on whether or not my grandmother should become the temporary conservator over my father’s personal and business estate.”

This is not the first time Singleton’s family has been in conflict. Back in 2016, one of his sons wrote an open letter accusing Singleton’s mother of being “an overbearing, manipulative mother who is jealous of anyone else’s happiness.”

Snapchat Gets Its First Black C-Suite Executive

Snap, the company that makes Snapchat, just named Kenny Mitchell as its new chief marketing officer. From the looks of Snap’s C-suite roster, it seems Mitchell is the company’s first African American corporate officer. Snap does African American representation on its board—McAfee CEO Christopher Young joined its board in October 2016.

Previously, Mitchell was the vice president of brand content and engagement for McDonald’s USA. He also was the head of consumer engagement at Gatorade. While at Gatorade he led the effort to introduce Snapchat vertical video and augmented reality tools as part of the company’s consumer marketing strategy.

Some of the memorable Gatorade campaigns he was involved with include Gatorade’s Dunk AR Lens for the Super Bowl—an award-winning ad; and the Serena Williams Snap Ad game, another award-winner.

He has held other executive positions at NASCAR and Dew Tour, a division of NBC Sports Group.

He will report directly to Snap CEO Evan Spiegel. In a press release, Spiegel commented on Mitchell’s hiring;

“Kenny’s consumer marketing expertise and his deep understanding of our products will be a great combination for Snap. Throughout his career, Kenny has demonstrated his ability to successfully execute innovative, global marketing campaigns, many of which have leveraged our own vertical video and augmented reality products. He’s a natural fit to join our team and lead marketing as we continue driving the positive momentum we have in the business.”

“Snap is a great company with strong values, an inspired vision and innovative products that are empowering its global community,” Mitchell said in a press release.

“I look forward to helping Evan and Snap continue to tell their story to people around the world, and working with my new colleagues as we define the future of the camera and self-expression.”

Mitchell holds a Bachelor of Arts from Dartmouth College and a Master of Business Administration from Dartmouth’s Tuck School of Business.

In 2017, the Snap CEO was accused of insensitive remarks in a lawsuit filed by a former employee. The lawsuit alleged Speigel said about the Snapchat app, “This app is only for rich people. I don’t want to expand into poor countries like India and Spain. Mr. Spiegel would not entertain any further discussion on the matter.”

Snap called the allegations “ridiculous,” and the accuser a “disgruntled employee,” at the time.

George Lucas and Mellody Hobson Fight to Save ‘Ebony’ and ‘Jet’ Magazines’ Historic Archives

Business titan Mellody Hobson and her husband, Star Wars filmmaker George Lucas, filed a court motion seeking control of the Ebony and Jet archives just weeks after the magazines’ former owner, Johnson Publishing Co. (JPC), filed for bankruptcy. According to The Wall Street Journal, the power couple is seeking to take control of the magazines’ archives, which contain thousands of historic photos and recordings of African American people, culture, and events.

JPC filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy earlier this month, putting the magazines’ collection of iconic footage, chronicling more than 70 years of African American life, in jeopardy. The archives include original photos of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and his funeral, Rosa Parks, Muhammad Ali, Langston Hughes, and Maya Angelou. It also includes photos taken of Emmett Till’s 1955 funeral along with a host of images published during the civil rights movement.

Johnson Publishing

Mellody Hobson

According to The Journal, JPC used the archives, which had once been appraised at $40 million, as collateral for a $12 million loan that the company received from Capital Holdings V. The loan, however, has been in default for three years, leaving the archives uninsured. As a result, when JPC filed for bankruptcy, the company’s assets were placed in control of a court-appointed trustee.

Capital Holdings V, a company controlled by Hobson and Lucas, filed a motion Wednesday in Chicago federal Bankruptcy Court seeking to foreclose on the archives, citing the risk to their loan repayment and the iconic photo collection.

“We are dedicated to preserving and celebrating stories and storytellers around the world,” Capital Holdings said in a statement to The Journal. “The Johnson Publishing archives are an essential part of American history and have been critical in telling the extraordinary stories of African American culture for decades. We want to be sure the archives are protected for generations to come.”

Johnson Publishing

George Lucas (Wikimedia)

Founded in 1942 by John H. Johnson, JPC once represented the pinnacle of success for African Americans. Meanwhile, the company’s founder and publisher served as an inspirational force for generations of black entrepreneurs. However, the company took a hard financial blow during the digital revolution. According to a BE report:

According to the Chapter 7 bankruptcy petition, filed in the Northern District of Illinois, JPC has between 200 and 999 creditors, as well as between $10 million and $50 million in both assets and liabilities. In making the announcement, the company said in a press release that it was “caught in a tidal wave of marketplace changes and business issues which, despite exhaustive efforts, could not be overcome.”

Over the years, financial troubles forced the firm to sell major assets. In 2016, the company sold Ebony and Jet magazines to Texas-based private equity firm CVG Group L.L.C., which still manages those media properties, and sold its headquarters in 2010. The company, which still owns the Fashion Fair cosmetics business as well as an expansive archive of about 4 million images and thousands of videos, will place those properties on the auction block.

Want Your Voice Heard? Advice on How to Get Speaking Engagements

Courtney Sanders is a speaker and podcaster who knows a thing or two about getting her voice heard. Having had the opportunity to grace many stages – including those for the United Nations and White House, Sanders offered advice for ways to clinch major speaking engagements.

How to Get Speaking Engagements

Positioning Yourself as a Speaker

Wanting to speak publicly and even being a great speaker are not enough to clinch major speaking engagements. Sanders began positioning herself as a speaker by doing two key things – hosting her own events and telling her network that she is a speaker.

“Hosting my own events was really helpful as it gave my community an opportunity to hear me speak, as well as me an opportunity to document my speaking ability when pitching myself to other engagements,” she says.

“Simply telling my network that I was now doing public speaking was extremely helpful, as that’s how my first paid gig came my way. A colleague of mine, who also is a professional speaker, had a gig that he was no longer able to speak at so he referred me. The only reason he gave them my name was because I posted on Facebook a few days prior that I was now accepting speaking engagements. When you let people know that you speak, they will keep you in mind when opportunities come up.”

How to Get Speaking Engagements

Courtney Sanders (Photo: Jaren Collins)

It’s also important that you are a groomed speaker. While experience certainly assists to make you better at your craft, having a coach or expert friend provide you with advice is priceless. Sanders shared:

“I do not have a formal speaking coach. Though, I have a friend and colleague, Stacey Flowers, who has helped me both formally and informally with my speaking technique and career. She’s an amazing professional speaker who has graciously shared a lot of wisdom with me over the years,” said Sanders.

Pricing Yourself as a Speaker

Many speakers (women, especially) have difficulty pricing themselves. Sanders explained why she feels this is such a challenge as well as her suggestions for doing so correctly.

“I believe pricing ourselves is such a challenge because we naturally undervalue our talents. For instance, speaking comes incredibly naturally to me and I’ve been good at it since I was 4 or 5 years old. When something is both easy and enjoyable for you, it’s easy to get in the habit of undervaluing yourself because you think it’s no big deal and in the beginning, you’d gladly do it for free!”

“To avoid undercharging in the beginning, I started networking with other professional speakers and set my prices within the same range as peers who had similar experience and visibility as me. As I continue to get bigger and better speaking engagements, and thus refine my craft, I increase my prices to match the new level of value I’m able to bring to my audiences.”

Dealing with The Nerves

According to the National Social Anxiety Center, the fear of public speaking is the majority of the population’s biggest fear – ahead of spiders, heights, and even death. Public speaking anxiety, also known as glossophobia, is said to affect 73% of the population. The fear of being embarrassed of messing up in front of peers and the negative judgement of onlookers leave many paralyzed.

But what does one do when they have something of value to share with the world? They re-channel those jitters into something more positive.

“I wouldn’t say I get nervous, but I do get that “jittery” surge of energy right before I step on stage. I think everyone gets that feeling; it’s just a matter of how you frame it in your mind. For new speakers, they start to feel jittery and think ‘Oh no! I’m nervous now!’ If they’re not careful that train of thought can totally derail their delivery. For me, when I feel those jitters, I get excited and say to myself “IT’S GO TIME!” In other words, I use the physical jitters as validation that I’m about to really bring it on stage.”

If you get nervous to speak in front of a crowd, try re-channelling nervous energy. Also, practice multiple times in advance (preferably in front of family and friends or your mirror), along with taking a few deep breaths before stepping on stage. Breathe in for a count of four, hold, and out for a count of four to relax yourself a bit.

Setting Boundaries

Setting boundaries is essential for earning respect in your industry, maintaining your sanity, and enjoying your role as a public speaker. Because of this, I had to know the boundaries Sanders felt were necessary to form from the onset.

“I think the biggest boundary you have to set for yourself as a speaker, or even as an entrepreneur where your knowledge is your product, is what you will and won’t do for free. At times, speaking or giving expert advice for free can be beneficial to gain more experience and exposure. But I’ve noticed that as you get better at what you do those that are close to you will want you to speak or advise them for free, and if you’re not careful, you’ll miss out on paid opportunities because you’re committing to so many free ones.

“For me, I set boundaries by — one, getting clear on what non-monetary benefits I’m willing to exchange my time for, and two, how much time I have every quarter or year to gift my services to people and causes I care about. For instance, I was not paid to speak at the White House, but I was of course willing to do so in exchange for the experience, networking opportunities, and footage for my speaking reel. As you can imagine, speaking at the White House has opened many doors for me, including a recent speaking engagement I did at the United Nations in New York City,” she says.

Public speaking gives you a platform to share your knowledge with others and position yourself as a thought leader in your niche. If you’re really great, it increase your visibility instantly.

Then there are days where, if I don’t wear makeup, people think I’m dying. I wish thre could be a balance between these two extremes, but there isn’t, my skin is binary. And so…

5 Innovative Lead Generation Strategies That Will Help Your Business Grow

If you are not implementing the best lead generation strategies, you are not empowering your business to scale. An increased volume of leads each day will generate additional customers and ultimately more revenue to your brand’s bottom line. However, it is essential to keep in mind that not all lead generation strategies work for every type of business. Consider implementing this innovative list of lead generation tactics to help you begin executing a successful marketing strategy for your company.

Press Release

Contrary to the opinion of modern content marketers press releases are not dead! A press release is a great way to expose targeted readers to your brand. In addition to the cost-effectiveness of creating a press release, you can also leverage the logos of the publications re-syndicating your release as social proof that will ensure the elevation of your brand’s perception. A simple press release is an excellent tool if you are releasing a new product and are promoting an exciting piece of news about your company. Towards the end of your press release, leave a link where users can visit your website and gather more information about your new product. Press releases are distributed in newspapers, magazines, and blogs and target a broad audience of potential customers (ultimately bringing more visitors to your website).

Email List

An email list is a great way to generate new leads frequently. Businesses with the most extensive email lists offer free content to readers in the form of ebooks, complimentary branding sessions, and training guides. Additionally, consider setting up an email form on your business’s website that offers a free promotional coupon to the visitors that signing up. This strategy will ultimately become a great system to continually generate a new list of potential customers to your business and allow you to properly retarget the potential clients who visit your website (and who have discovered your brand from reading your press release).

Landing Page

To capture leads, create a professional-looking landing page or “squeeze” page. After your page is complete, invest in a solo ad to direct potential customers to your page so they sign up for your promotions. Also, consider retargeting the visitors to your landing page via social media through marketing tools like Facebook Pixel.

Promotional Contest

Sponsorship has been used as a promotional tool to generate leads for as long as marketing has existed. The great thing about this particular lead generation technique is the fact it still works well to this day. Consider creating a local promotional contest, offering a prize for the best design or branded photo. This strategy is a great way to increase (and retarget) traffic to your business’s website as the contest becomes more frequently shared with others.

Viral Marketing

Viral marketing is also an exceptional lead generation technique you can leverage to bring attention to your digital brand. To utilize this technique, simply set up an opt-in box on your website that requires visitors to enter their email address and then requires the visitor to share your web page in order to see the contents of your website. Along with capturing a visitor’s email address, you are also getting your content shared to various social media outlets for additional traffic (adding the viral factor to your content).

Implementing lead generation techniques do not have to become a laborious effort. The key is to be as creative as possible and to leverage innovation to capture your visitor’s contact information. Simply put, your website visitors are not going to enter their personal contact information without receiving something of value in return. By offering value to potential customers, you are better able to grow your lead list and market more effectively with your business’s future promotions.

United Negro College Fund Celebrates 75 Years of Black Excellence and Supporting HBCUs

Everyone has their eyes on HBCUs right now. Especially after Beyoncé’s ode to historically black colleges and universities during her critically acclaimed Coachella performance and Homecoming documentary on Netflix.

But, for the past 75 years, the United Negro College Fund has been doing it for the culture and investing in black brilliance. In fact, they have helped nearly half a million students earn college degrees. In honor of 75 years of service, today UNCF is celebrating their anniversary with two events at its headquarters in Washington, DC.

Today, UNCF is set to kick off the organizations national one-day online Giving Campaign that will help 75 students in need of financial assistance receive the support they need to attend and graduate from an HBCU. In addition to the campaign, 37 students from Washington D.C., Maryland, and Virginia will be awarded scholarships to attend UNCF-member HBCUs.

We spoke with Dr. Michael Lucius Lomax, president and CEO of UNCF, about his “go forward” strategy; the vision for the organization’s future; and how people can invest in the future of HBCUs while momentum is at an all-time high.

Black Enterprise: With UNCF celebrating 75 years of excellence, what does your “go forward” strategy entail as the black community seeks to preserve the legacy of HBCUs?

UNCF is a laser-focused advocate for its 37 private HBCUs and is one of the nation’s most effective advocates for all HBCUs. Despite obstacles and barriers, assaults and attacks, under-investment and devaluation, HBCUs persist in the pursuit and execution of their mission.

HBCUs account for only 3% of the nation’s colleges and universities, and they enroll 10% of all African American undergraduates. Yet, they consistently punch above their weight, producing 17% of all bachelor’s degrees earned by African Americans. And they produce strong, impressive results and impact—educational, economic, and societal impacts for their students, the communities in which they are rooted, and for our nation. They remain true to their values and produce out-sized results, annually contributing $14.8 billion to the national economy; and, 134,090 jobs to their local and regional economies.

UNCF’s “go forward” strategy is centered around prioritizing the sustainability and transformation of the UNCF network of powerful HBCUs so that we can continue to produce the next generation of leaders.

Everyone has been infatuated with Beyoncé’s ode to HBCUs in her Homecoming documentary. What charge do you have for people to engage and support black academia given the national moment we’re living in?

Our anniversary is coming at a time when the current political and cultural turmoil has reignited many issues around diversity, inclusion, representation, and justice. Seeing some representation—but not inclusion—in many of our nation’s cultural and civic institutions, African Americans seem to be turning away from past integration efforts and are, instead, seeking out and re-investing in black spaces.

The recognition of higher education and the powerful impact it has on the black community has been at the forefront of this phenomenon, as we have seen the rise of Afro-centric P-12 education and a return to HBCUs. Prominent black Americans are more and more supporting and investing in these spaces.

As UNCF redoubles its commitment to support our member HBCUs and to education for all, we are issuing a charge to support academia by increasing investments in two of our nation’s greatest resources—HBCUs and our youth.

75 years from now, what impact do you wish for UNCF to have?

Throughout 75 years of service, UNCF’s core mission has remained the same. We’re proud to have helped cultivate some of the country’s most brilliant minds for decades, helping more than 450,000 students graduate from college since our founding and annually supporting more than 60,000 students across 1,100 colleges and awarding 10,000 scholarships to deserving students. UNCF has more than doubled the number of minorities attending college. Still, for every scholarship UNCF gives a student in need, we must turn away nine other applicants for lack of funding.

So 75 years from now UNCF seeks to have (1) doubled the number of students we have been able to get to and through college; (2) created generations of new leaders; and (3) secured a UNCF legislative and appropriations agenda that ensures all African American students will have equal education access.

Joe Biden Hires Symone Sanders as His 2020 Presidential Campaign Strategist

Former Vice President Joe Biden has selected Symone Sanders to be a senior adviser to his 2020 presidential campaign, the AP is reporting.

Sanders was the former press secretary for Sen. Bernie Sanders (no relation) during the 2016 election when the Vermont senator ran as the Democrat nominee.

The 29-year-old is also a high-profile political analyst at CNN. She spoke at this year’s Black Enterprise Women of Power Summit.

In an interview with Black Enterprise, Sanders spoke about the value black women bring to the political arena.

“I think the political and democratic apparatus has woken up to see the real value of black women and now they are doing all kinds of things to hold on to it and bring black women into the fold and black women are like, ‘We just want you to hire us, give us resources, let us lead, and get out of our way,” she said.

As someone who is often on the forefront of heated conversations and debates, Sanders is known for her ability to stand her ground. Beyond her career, she says that there are two things that no one can go toe-to-toe with her on and they are Nebraska and Beyoncé.

“I’m from Nebraska and you can’t tell me nothing about Nebraska. I’m also a Beyoncé fan and you can’t tell me nothing about Beyoncé. I don’t care who you are, what setting we’re in, or where we are—if I’m in a meeting with a potential president of the United States, if we get on the topic of Nebraska and Beyoncé, I am going to feel very emboldened to speak up and push back and talk to you about that. So, black women, we need to feel the same way about Nebraska and Beyoncé as we do about all of these other things that we deal with in our workplace every single day.”
